How do I get my computer to recognize my canon powershot A40?

All of the online help keeps telling me that my computer should automatically recognize my camera through the usb port, but it doesn't. I've gone to the canon website and downloaded the driver and installed it, but it still doesn't work! I need to get my pictures! can anyone please help me?

I assume you are working on Win XP. Start the Cannon software that came alongwith the camera (hope u have installed it beforehand), connect the camera through the USB port, keep the camera in Play mode, switch it on. Windows will now detect a usb device and then will show the name of the camera, click on that balloon and select which pictures you want to import (even if you have not installed the cannon software this should work since xp now comes with the required device manager).

once you downloaded the driver and installed it, did you received a desktop or a shortcut icon? nothing when you click on the actual program? make sure it's in your program files. I would start there.

get a multi-type card reader. its a stress to your camera when it transfers the photos to the pc

I have a powershot A40 digital camera, how do I turn the flash off?

I don't have the instructions manual and I need to turn off flash.

First of all, in the U.S. you can call Canon Tech support at 1-800 OK-Canon. I call them at least once a month for tech support. You can also order a new instruction manual on their website (www.usa.canon.com). Now for the specifics, I don't own that model, but most work the same. There should be a button with a squiggly line with an arrow at the end (looks like a lightening bolt). If you press that multiple times, you will step through the flash functions: Normal, Fill (always on), Red-eye-reduction and finally off which looks like that lightenting bolt again but with a circle around it with a line through it.

just simply click the right arrow button (at the right of 'SET').. hope it helps... :D

Wait for it to go off.

I have A520 and I can turn off the flash by pressing the TOP ARROW button. Should be same with your as well. Just check it out. When you Press the TOP arrow button, it changes its mode from Auto Flash to Flash and then to No flash. You should see the indicator on your LCD screen.

What digital camera should I buy that is comparable to the Canon PowerShot A40?

This camera has been discontinued, but we really liked the features. I am looking into buying another Canon, unless convinced otherwise, and there are too many choices. I am looking to spend about $200-250. Any ideas?

The Canon 1.9MP, A40 is an old model which was released almost 6 years ago. The newer models obviously have updated image quality and features, faster camera performance, and take better movies.

Canon is a great brand that has some excellent models on offer. Getting a camera with IS (image stabilization) makes sense, so I would recommend either...

A570 IS...7MP, 4x optical zoom, image stabilization, aperture & shutter priority modes. It's a good budget camera. It's main downside is slow flash recovery times.

A720 IS...8MP, 6x optical zoom, image stabilization, aperture & shutter priority modes.
It's my pick...because it's a little better than the A570 IS and has just a little more optical zoom (never use digital zoom, which only results in poor image quality).
And it only costs around $200 or less.

For cost effectiveness and a good power source, you will need to buy rechargeable AA NiMH batteries (high capacity, 2500-2700mAh) and a charger. This will provide 400+ shots per charge. Charge them regularly because their power will drain when not used. To extend battery life, limit the time the LCD is on. Turn it off in-between shots and limit the time you spend reviewing your images. The LCD uses most of your battery power (other than the flash and the zoom).

You will also need to buy a fast SD memory card for fast camera operation and especially when recording high quality movies of (640x480 @ 30fps). Which is so much better than the old A40's (320x240 @ 20fps) which were limited to 10 sec clips. The A720 IS's clips are limited to 4GB. That would be around 32 minutes!

Sandisk Ultra II SD or the slightly faster, Extreme III SD (1-2GB minimum) is my recommendation. They are fast, reliable and come with a lifetime warranty (not to mention, are dirt cheap). Don't forget to Format the card (in the camera's Menu) before you use it and everytime AFTER you have safely uploaded all images to your computer. Doing this will prevent card errors.

good luck...

get the canon sd 850. that's the one i got its really really good! try it it costed the same in some pleaces

sony i have it it is so so sooooooooooooooo good it can take over 25 pics a day but it's only for 155 dollers

The PowerShot A40 was a 2 megapixel camera with a 3x zoom.

The comparable Canon these days would be the Canon A570 IS, which has a lot of improvements over your old camera:
* 7mp imager
* 4x zoom
* image stabilization
* face detection focusing
* Uses only 2 AA batteries, not 4.
* Can use larger capacity cards

Canon doesn't make compact cameras that use compact flash like your old A40. The small ones all use Secure Digital memory (SD memory) and the A570 IS can also use SDHC or secure digital high capacity.

Best of all, the price of cameras has come down. You don't need to spend $200. You can get the A570 IS in a store for $180 or online at a place like Amazon for $145. That leaves you more money for new SD memory cards, rechargeable batteries, a charger, and a case.

I need a zoom lens for a Canon Powershot A40 digital camera?

Can anybody recommend a zoom lens that is compatible with a Canon powershot A40?

Your camera does not have interchangeable lenses. It does have a 35-105 optical zoom built-in. Don't waste your money on those after-market lenses that go on the front of your lens.

If you want interchangeable lenses you'll have to invest in a DSLR.

ya

isnt zoom already a function on the camera

How do i upload photos onto my computer from my Canon PowerShot A40?

I already tried to just plug it in but it said that it could not find the correct drive, and now nothing even comes up.

Canon drivers are needed to transefer like you mentioned. Download them free from the Canon site.
USB breed not critical, but 2.0 will be MUCH faster.
If want a super dandy organizer and image editor, get Google's 'Picasa'. It's free and does many of the things general family fotos need.

What is the maximum capacity CF card that a Canon Powershot A40 and A75 support?

We have a Canon Powershot A40 and a Canon Powershot A75, and I would like to know what the maximum card size supported is for each of these. Please could you only answer if you are sure your information is correct for *these* *models* - any answer starting 'I think' isn't very helpful...

I know that a canon powershot a75 can go up to at least a gig but not sure if it go higher. look up the memory card at bestbuy.com or something to see.

Why is my canon powershot A40 digital camera downloading each picture twice ?

This happens when I download from my camera to Zoombrowser EX

I have a used Canon Powershot A40. Now the pic looks like an out of tune TV image and so are the photos.?

I have only had it for one week. Up until now the images and pics looked good now they look like a TV thats out of tune, the colors are way off and the images are all distored and fuzzy. It is a Canon Powershot A40. What can I do to fix this? I really like this camera and it would suck to have to get another one. Anybody that knows what I could do please give me the lowdown.
The images now look all wavy and fuzzy like a TV channel thats out of tune. The colors are highly distorted and are usually a washed out even purple-ish hue if there is any color left. The most aggrivating thing is that when you turn it on in the morning after it has sat untouched for a long time and flip it into camera mode it will actually work like it should, showing proper looking video on the screen for a split second before getting all hazy and wavy with wrong colors again.
I turned off digital zoom a day or two before this happened because digital zoom is just a cheesy gimmick of little value.

You might have accidentally set it to macro/close up focus mode. This could explain the fuzzy/out of focus images. Not sure about the colors though...

on my powershot a40 camera the zoom does not work any ideas?

It is either the zoom switch/lever or there is some small bits of sand/dirt/dust in the zoom gears. Considering the age of this camera (Released Febuary 2002) either are likely. One way to tell is to try and zoom and try to listen for a zooming sound. If the lens makes a sound and shuts down, then it is something to do with the zoom gears. If it makes a bunch of clicking sound then the gears are likely broken.
If it makes no sound when zooming, then it is likely the switch.

My friend gave me her old camera; canon PowerShot A40..and I dont know how to get the pictures off of it..?

I have the USB cord but the install CD that she got with it is missing..I also downloaded this program called Zoombrowser EX and that didnt help..!

You don't need a CD. Your computers file manager will see the camera as a removable drive. Just drag and drop the images from the camera to the computer.

You can always buy a card reader (under $15) and put the memory card in it.
