Can a Canon Powershot A400 be used as a webcam?
I'd like to know if it's possible to use my Powershot A400 camera as a webcam and what software should I use to do it? I have searched google time and again, and I've seen just as many people saying it's possible as people saying it's not.
Can anybody help me here?
No, because Powershots are DSCs (Digital Still Cameras). This means that they are meant for snapshots, and though they often have movie modes built in, they can't connect live to PCs. The closest you could get to using a Powershot as a webcam is to shoot a short movie clip of yourself and then post it on IM or whatever you want to use for your webcam. It cannot, however, connect to a computer and record your actions as they happen.

SD cards have a little switch to write protect the contents. Check your SD memory card.
1)Turn off camera
2)Take the card out
3)On the card, there is a little switch. Move it to the other side
4)put it back in
5)turn on your camera

How come my Canon Powershot A400 digi camera keeps running out of batteries?
I use normal batteries because the charger batteries are too expensive and they always run out in the first 15 minutes, and THAT'S a waste. Can someone please tell me how to have a even longer lasting battery for this camera?
If you mean by 'normal batteries', the so-called Heavy Duty ones, then they're not worth the money. Even regular AA Alkalines, though they last longer, won't give you the results of lithium batteries or rechargeable NiMH batteries.
NiMH batteries have a very good lifespan and hold a charge for a fairly long time. If you've used some of the older NiCad rechargeables, I can see your disappointment.
Bottomline is that rechargeable batteries are the best way to go because you can use them over and over and over! (I hope you're not throwing them away?!?!)
Want to make any battery last longer on your Canon Powershot?
1. Turn off the lcd screen and use the viewfinder. The lcd is a notorious energy drain.
2. Also, use less flash. You can use natural light if you raise your ISO (sensitivity) setting on your camera.
3. Turn off the camera when you're not shooting pictures. While ON, there is a constant battery drain.
Hope these ideas help. By the way, I always recommend having extra batteries and extra memory cards with you.
The real waste is buying all those AA batteries and only getting a few minutes of use from them.
With proper energy management, you should be able to get a whole days use out of a set of NiMH batteries. Save your power by shutting off the LCD and use the viewfinder you camera has (this will have the added benefit of stabilizing the camera with your cheek and reducing camera movement when shooting). The LCD is THE hog with it comes to using up your cameras battery power.
Only other real option is the Energizer Lithium AA disposable batteries. They last between 400- 600 photos in most cameras but cost about $5.00 per pair. Cheaper per pic than alkaline batteries, but the cost still adds up.
To give you an idea of total long term cost: 1 single NIMH AA battery will last [in total use] as long as 140 disposable lithium batteries and 500 alkaline AA's [these #'s per Consumer Reports].
One last thing... some cheap digital cameras [usually ones that don't have a removable memory card] drain the batteries even when the camera is turned off. If your camera has this problem make sure to offload all pics and remove the batteries when not in use.
Try a brandname set of new Alkalines and see how many shots you get...without flash, you should get around 100 pictures...with flash that will drop to around 50 or so.
if you still don't get more than a few shots, then you need to replace or repair the camera....
How do you upload photos to your computer with a Canon PowerShot A400 digital camera?
Install the program from the CD that came with your camera. Hook up your camera to your computer through the cable link. If you have Windows, go to My Computers. Select the drive that your camera appears under (usually the E drive). Then browse through your folder for the pictures. Select all the pictures you want to upload. Right-click, copy, and save it to whatever folder you want on your computer.
What size memory cards does a Canon PowerShot A400 take?
I put a 2.0 GB in and it doesn't seem to be working.
The A400 was released over 4 years ago and i'm not sure if a camera that old will accept a 2GB card. If the Formatting doesn't work, then you probably need to stick to a maximum 1GB capacity card.
A new memory card should ALWAYS be formatted BEFORE use, in its parent camera. Many users of P&S cameras experience card errors IF they have never formatted the card. Formatting after each use cycle (shoot, copy to computer, format), you should never have card problems.

The A400 is now 2 1/2 years old and is only 3.1MP...so, there is not really much point in fixing it unless it can be done for a few dollars.
Sounds like a good excuse to buy a newer and updated model. I would still recommend Canon, but with a minimum of 6MP.
Look at the Canon A540, A630 or A640.
Or for an ultra compact, look at SD600, SD630 or SD700 IS.
All the models I have mentioned are at least 6MP, are faster to operate, and also take much better 'movies' (with sound).

A friend gave just the camera to me without the cable or software that came with it. My pictures are on the camera and i will like to post them online but dont know how to go about doing that. is there anything i'll have to buy or download to have this accomplished? Plssssss help me.

Have you fixed an E18 error on a Canon Powershot A400?
My Canon Powershot A400, has stopped working. When I attempt to turn it on to take a picture, the lens extends part of the way, then stops, and the screen shows "E18" in the corner. I'm able to use it to view pictures I've taken, if I'm not in picture taking mode.
A couple weeks ago, I dropped it onto a paved bike path because a tick was running around like crazy on my shirt and I was trying to remove it so it wouldn't bite me. But the camera's worked fine since then, until yesterday, when I took a couple pictures, turned it off, and when I turned it back on, it stopped working.
Apparently this is a common problem, and some people have fixed it by disassembling the camera and cleaning out the gears that move the lens. I found a guide on how to do this but it is for a different Canon camera. Sending the camera to Canon for repairs would cost more than a new camera, as the warranty has expired.
Does anyone have experience E18 errors on a Powershot A400? Thanks for your help!
TomTom: I'm aware that it needs to be repaired, but I'm asking how to do that. Sending it to Canon would cost more than the camera's worth, so I'm looking for a way to do it myself. I don't have money in my budget right now to pay their exorbitant repair fees.
