Ambitious time-lapse shows weather, circadian patterns imaging resource (press release)

A blog post today from John Nack, principal product manager (mobile) at Adobe Systems Inc., tipped us off to an interesting project by Ken Murphy, a Californian artist, musician and programmer with an interest in time-lapse photography.

Nicely proving that even long-in-the-tooth digital cameras can offer good results in the right hands, Ken set up a six year old  Canon Powershot A520 digital camera on the roof of San Francisco's Exploratorium museum . The A520 was hooked up to a low-power computer, and mounted inside a salvaged NEMA Type 3 enclosure to provide protection from the elements. To avoid potential exposure issues if the sun entered the frame, Ken mounted the camera facing north, and aimed 45 degrees above the horizon to capture a wide-angle view of the sky. Then, he set everything up to capture over three million 0.7 megapixel images at ten second intervals from sunrise to sunset, every day, for a year.

Where it really gets cool, though, is how Ken chose to visualize the results. The resulting half terabyte of photos were turned into 360 separate videos, each documenting one particular day from sunrise to sunset. These were then combined into a single final video, with almost an entire year's worth of individual videos tiled side by side, and synchronized so that at any given moment, all 360 videos show the same time of day. As you play Ken's work, entitled " A History of the Sky ", it's easy to see not only the length of the days changing as the seasons progress, but also to spot less more subtle trends in the weather patterns throughout the year.

Ken's website has a lot more information on the project, as well as some ideas for alternate presentation methods, including an interesting multi-screen variation. The project will apparently continue as an active exhibit, with the aim of always including the most recent 365-day period. Very cool!

My wife's Canon Powershot A520 point and shoot camera. She no longer needs this since she has an iPhone4. The nice things about the camera is ...

What is going on with my PowerShot A520 digital camera?

I have had my PowerShot A520 digital camera since Christmas 2005 and never had any problems with it until now. My friend, Sarah, and I were taking a lot of pictures with it the other day and I plugged it into the computer to download them onto the computer and I didn't see the icon that allows you to carefully unplug the cord so I just pulled the cord out of the computer and didn't look at the camera until the next day. When I did look at the camera, I noticed that it was frozen in a position that I had never seen before. The camera lens was sticking out only halfway and when I try to turn it on, the screen lights up normally but then it just beeps six times really quickly and then shuts off. I know it’s not the batteries because I just put fresh ones in right now and I’m pretty sure I used the right cord when I plugged it into the computer but if I had used the wrong cord, would that have caused this problem? Did I break my camera? Did I put it on hold or something? I need help right now because I can’t seem to find the receipt or warranty anywhere? Has anyone else had this problem before?

Broken camera.

Their website says to turn the camera off and on again. Since that isn't working they say you need to contact a service agent.

Here is the link to enter your address info. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ServiceLocatorAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=11125

How can I make my Canon PowerShot A520 to put a date on my pictures?

Not how to set the date and time but how can I show it on my pictures?

See page 54 and 55 in your manual. You can only imprint the date in the Postcard mode.

Setting the Postcard Mode:
Press the FUNC button
Scroll to the image size selector
Set the image size to "Postcard" 1600x1200
Press FUNC to save
--
Setting the date imprint to "On":
First, be sure that you have selected the Postcard mode
Press the MENU button
Choose the RECORD menu, which has an icon that looks like a camera
Scroll down to "Date Stamp"
Scroll to the right to choose "Off," "Date," or "Date & Time"
Press MENU to save
--
The image size will be 1600x1200 pixels.
You can not save the date in any other mode.
You can only turn the date stamp on or off if you are in Postcard mode.
You can not remove the date stamp from the image once it has been embedded. You would have to use Photoshop (etc.) to cover it up.
Be sure that your camera's clock is set to the correct time and date.

Think menu or settings button.. almost all canon cameras have the same access or very similar access to date stamp.. just flip through the menu.. and adjust settings..

How To Make videos on Canon PowerShot A520?

I'm having trouble using the video mode, how do I make and save videos on a Canon PowerShot A520 . ??

There should be a dial on the top of your camera. One of the last options is the icon with the "old time" movie camera.

That should be movie mode. Then just Click the shutter button fully to start recording.

You can also set a timer function to have it start recording after a predetermined amount of time, if this feature is available.

Is it possible to build an underwater housing for a Canon PowerShot A520?

I would like to be able to take photographs at a depth no greater than 60 feet. If you could direct me to some plans or a book about the subject please do. If there is an underwater housing for this camera how much does it cost?

Yup, they sell the waterproof casing for this (40m I thnk)
Cost S$370 which probably works out to <US$200
Model is Waterproof Case WP-DC60 (A510 / A520)

hooking up Canon PowerShot A520 camera on my HP Pavilion f1903 computer?

I've got a Canon digital camera called the Powershot A520. Plus, I've got a Hewlett-Packard pavilion f1903 computer. I want my pictures from my digital camera on my computer. The camera company gave me the interface cable with two sticking wires or something (color coated black and yellow) and on the other end is a mini hook thing I'm suppose to hook on to my digital camera. The two sticking wires are suppose to be connected to a USB port. Would that be on the back of the computer monitor or on the front of the computer monitor? Also, my wires are round like, not square, though I'm not sure if the Canon company forgot to give me the wires I need to attach my camera pictures into my computer.

You are taking about a video cable that is to view the pics on a TV the round wire, the other use the usb connect the camera anywhere or take out the memory and send the pics directly into the comp.

Setting for Canon PowerShot A520 action shots?

I want to know what setting to put the knob thing on the top for action shots. If I use auto it's just a little too blurry and doesn't cut it.

Usually someone running. There may also just be a symbol for scene which will let you choose sports on the camera's menu. Also, get yourself a tripod and remember to put the shutter button down halfway to pre-focus before the action happens. That will make it take the picture faster when you put it down completely.

i have a cannon powershot a520 digital camera, i plug it into my computer and nothing happens... help?

ok i plug my usb cord into my computer then turn on my camera and plug the cord into that and nothing happens........

Canon PowerShot A520 Memory Cards. I would like to buy 4GB or 8GB high speed memory card. Will it work?

This camera is 4 yr old, and I'm wondering if if can use these larger memory cards?

it is too old. Most P&S cameras that old only will use SD cards that are limited to 2 GB.

You will need to either buy a new camera that uses SDHC cards or limit the number of images you save to each of your smaller cards.

Do NOT delete images from your card when it starts to get full. This is nearly the surest way to cause corruption of the card and losing all your images.

A new memory card should ALWAYS be formatted BEFORE use, in its parent camera. Many users of P&S cameras experience card errors IF they have never formatted the card. Formatting after each use cycle (shoot, copy to computer, format), you should never have card problems.
