Tetris on my Canon PowerShot A95!

Can I change the file name of downloaded pictures to include a date for a Canon PowerShot A95 camera?

Currently when I download pictures from my camera to my computer the default file names are IMG_0191.jpg with the number always incrementing. Images are stored in a folder named after a calendar date (2006_05_22). I'd like to have the jpg file name include the date by default somehow. I can't seem to figure out how to make that happen. I've seen a friends canon do that though it was a different model.

Please wait a few days for Canon experts to chime in, but if all else fails, you can download a rename utility. This is a program that will let you add the date to all the files in a specified folder.
Here's a free one: http://www.tucows.com/preview/294131

on the setup menu you can modify that...but no, you can not make the nametags like that.

How do I turn off the white balance feature on my Canon Powershot a95?

I'm doing an expirement, and I need to turn off the white balance feature of my digital camera, so it captures the image exactly as it sees it, without any adjustments. How do I?

I have not seen a way to turn White Balance "off".

Perhaps the closest thing would be to use the Daylight setting. In most cameras, Daylight is considered the "standard" lighting, and the other settings adjust the image to get back to "standard".

Take some test shots using Daylight in other circumstances, then see if your pic looks like the circumstance rather than what it would look like in daylight.

Good Luck

you can't turn it off
you can put it on auto

Actually, the camera captures the image exactly as the CCDs see it using sunlight, incandesant, flourscent or a tinted light source illuminating the object of interest.

The white balance control of the camera compensates for the illuminating light source so what should be white in the picture is white, ie someone wearing a "white" tee shirt may have a green tinge because he's in a room with flourscent light.

The CCD is actually capturing the image correctly but because you know the tee shirt should be "white" it does not look natural, so you use the camera "white balance" control to select flourscent light source and it will compensate and render the tee shirt "white" with no green tinge.

Your eyes may not see the flourscent green tinge because the brain, the greatest compensator of all, corrects the color and you perceive the tee shirt as "white".

If you want to match what you see with the image from the camera screen, you will have to take the Cannon PS A95 out of Auto, go through the menus and experiment with the various choices of "white" balance, take a picture(s), display it on computer, with accurate/calibrated monitor and pick the "white" balance photo(s) which you see.

Where can I find out how to use my Canon Powershot A95?

The Canon website is down & I need my camera tomorrow. I lost the booklet.

Try the Canon Australia Webpage...it's working and its the same information.

when there, click on DOWNLOADS on the left hand side
then Manuals on the left hand side
enter the model name of your camera...then press GO
then click on the 1. link
then click on Manuals where it says SETUP
then download the Camera User Guide (its the first one)

Can I use my Canon Powershot A95 as a webcam?

If possible how do I go about it? Thanks!

It is possible to use the Canon Powershot A95 as a web cam but you need to use third party software in order to do it and the process is not very simple.

One of the products that can do this is Pic2Page:

http://www.pic2page.ch/

Another documented method is to use PSRemote and Softcam to control your camera and thereby use it as a webcam:

http://www.breezesys.com/PSRemote/index.htm

Both of the methods above require you to pay for the additional software. It doesn't come with the Powershot.

If you want a hassle free way then you would be advised to order a seperate standalone web cam.

Is the quality of the images produced by the Canon PowerShot S3 better than the ones taken w/ a PowerShot A95?

I know it has 1 more MP and a 12X zoom and all that stuff. What I'm interested in is in the quality of the image per se. Better? Worse? The same?

Selecting a Canon with traditionally excellent optics is a great choice.

Because of the extra one (1) MP, the Canon S3 provides a better overall image, particularly if you want to enlarge the image when printing.

Also, the Canon S3 has a larger optical lense in width, enabling it to capture a larger chunk of the actual photo being taken. Thus better photo quality.

The other quality control feature with the S3 is an image stabilizer . This greatly reduces any "fuzz" if you have a shaky hand or are taking photos from un unsteady surface.

If you are concerned with the image, but price is a concern, go with the Canon S2 (close to the S3), and you will have the same superior quality as the S3.

Here is a good recent review with picture quality info: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_s3-review/

All the best in making your choice!

Cannon Powershot A95 digital camera- Screen won't work?

Was working fine and then I gently put it down on the ground, and when I picked it up the screen wasn't working properly. When I turn on the camera the screen goes all white, then darkens to black, and nothing else will show on it.

This has suddenly become a recurring theme with owners of Canons and Sony compact cameras. Either gravity is having an intermittent effect on the camera or there is a design flaw in the cameras viewing system.

That said, your camera is over three year old, to having it repaired will cost you more than it may be worth.

Look for a replacement that has IS and maybe a 4 or 5x optical zoom.

If you can find one that uses CF cards you will still be able to use the ones you have for your A95. Other wise you should look for one that uses SD cards ... they are now the standard for compact digital cameras

Which is the best digital camera SONY DSC-W50 or Canon PowerShot A95?

Where are you coming up with these old Canon cameras? The A95 was replaced by the A620, which has been replaced by the A630.

If you really have an A95 for purchase, it's a good camera with a larger sensor than the Sony. My son had one for a couple of years before he got his A620, which is an excellent camera.

I'd suggest that, if you are looking to buy a new camera, the comparison will come down to the Sony DSC-W50 and the Canon Powershot A630. In that case, I'd choose the Canon for the bigger sensor, more zoom, more user control and "AA" batteries.

A more direct dollar and spec comparison would be the Canon Powershot A540, which still has more zoom and more user control and "AA" batteries. The Sony is a closer match for this camera, though, and I'd say it comes down to how the camera looks and feel to you. They seem to review about the same.

Linux (debian) Canon PowerShot A95?

I have a Canon PowerShot A95, on my laptop I am running Linux (debian) I need help downloading my pictures when I plug my camera into my laptop and turn on my camera I get a pop up which says ~Camera has been detected ~ and it gives me the option to inport the images. I press inport and nothing happens please help

Unless Canon supplies Linux drivers, you are out of luck unless you can find an open source driver for it.

While Unix is used by some of the most powerful Sun and Silcone Graphics computers for motion picture special effects, animation and CAD, I have not met any photo post production wizards that use that OS ... most use Windows and the rest Apple.
