What memory card would you reccommend for Canon Powershot G9?

I am just about the purchase a Canon Powershot G9 but there is a few types of memory card it will take, I'm assuming that a SDHC card is the best but there is so many different types of manufacturer. Please help me!

An SDHC card is just a high capacity SD card, nothing more. So, if you think you need a card with more capacity than 2GB, then buy an SDHC card. e.g. 4GB
The very popular and reliable, Sandisk Extreme III would have to be one of THE best cards you can get...

i would advise you to find some of the best online digital cameras sellers and get what is the most right for you because there are memory cards that were designed to specific camera of different capacities ranging form 1GB to over 6GBs and more try http://www.best-digital-camera-store.com

What is the BEST case for the Canon Powershot G9?

I have a Canon Powershot G9, but i don't have a camera case. I would prefer a soft case that stores the battery charger, extra batteries, SD cards, and possibly some accessory lenses. Any ideas are appreciated! :]
Also, what are your opinions on the Lowepro Apex 60 AW, I've read some mixed reviews on this case (however most claimed this was the best case for the G9)...

As a armature photographer I would recommend getting the Apex 60 AW is the perfect case for your camera. It will fit all you camera equipment.

Any CANON cameras similar to the Canon PowerShot G9?

Do you think the G9 is a good camera? I'm looking for a new camera under $350 that takes pictures like the quality of an SLR. I like the whole blurry background..

What do you think of the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS 9-MP?

You can compare them here---

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_sx110is%2Ccanon_g9&show=all

The SX110 is okay, but doesn't have a viewfinder and that is something that is very valuable in bright sunlight, as the LCD is worthless in sunlight. Of the two, I would get the G9.

yes, sx110 is great and i also like nikon d90

To be able to 'take pictures like the quality of an SLR'...you need a dSLR.
From reviews of the G9, you can see that it has nowhere near the image quality or performance of a dSLR. ISO capability is fairly poor...

The SX110 IS hasn't been reviewed as yet, but for a super zoom camera (with point & shoot simplicity AND full manual controls), it sounds good...just don't expect dSLR-like image quality. But at less than US$300, why not? if that's all you want to pay...but the lack of a viewfinder is a bit of a turn off though.

Is the Canon powershot G9 a good camera for a amature photographer?

I'm a teenager who really wants to get into photography and was wondering if the canon g9 would be a good first step?? I'm willing to spend up to $800. Any reviews or suggestions would be great

The G9 is a very good camera (I have the G6, several years older)

But if you have $800 to spend, why not get a dSLR? I am more familiar with Nikon, and I know the D40 and D40x dSLR can be had for that price or less, and I believe the Sony, Pentax or Olympus kit would be in that price range as well. Or save up a few more dollars and get a mid-level dSLR like the D80. The G9 is good, but lacks the versatility of interchangeable lenses and the myriad of accessories that any dSLR will offer. Also higher ISO performance will be better. Either way will get you started, though. Enjoy the trip!

its good for all.

I have a Canon G7 pretty much the same thing, i personally think it's a great camera for a first step, the G9 added RAW support which will also be beneficial for you.

Camera is not the main key but your skill is.
If you really want to get into photography, get good DSLR at once (but will cost > $1200)

too advanced

All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......

The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

digital camera GUIDE
be sure to check titles on the left side
the guide should answer your questions

Yes - IF you're willing to really READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual. You should consider these books also:

"Hands-On Digital Photography" by George Schaub

"How Digital Photography Works, Second Edition" by Ron White

They were reviewed in the Dec. 2007 issue of Shutterbug Magazine and you can read them at shutterbug.com.

Although somewhat dated (it deals with film and film cameras) the book "Object & Image: An Introduction To Photography, Third Edition" by George M. Craven, is a wealth of information about composition, exposure, and light.

IMO, if you have $800 and you're willing to really READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual for any camera you buy, you might take a look at the Pentax K10D. It is a 10mp camera with dust removal for the sensor and Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body. It can use every K-mount lens made since 1975 in manual focus. It is also well sealed against dust and moisture (no, it isn't waterproof).

There are also numerous on-line tutorials and classes you can take advantage of.

The bottom line is how much effort you're willing to put into actually learning about your camera and photography.

Long life batteries for Canon Powershot G9 camera?

I've got a G9 camera and the battery that came with the camera doesn't last long - it's a Li-ion720mAh 7.4v battery. I've seen non-genuine Canon batteries for sale online that were purchased originally from China that are Li-ion 1700mAh however not sure if they are OK to use with the G9.

Has anyone purchased something like this and has it been OK? Has anyone had a bad experience with a battery and the G9 camera?

I, myself would be hesitant to buy a non-genuine product (especially one which comes from China), even though a genuine Canon battery is quite pricey. So, I can't really answer your query regarding a non genuine product.

Anyway, in regards to the battery which came supplied with your camera...
There are a number of things you can do to try to extend the life of the battery. It's rated at up to 240 shots when fully charged (with the LCD on) and up to 600 shots (with the LCD off).
The LCD screen is probably the biggest user of battery power, so you can obviously turn it off and use the viewfinder to compose your shots instead.
Also, try to limit reviewing your images on the LCD, and turn it off in-between shots.
Limiting the use of the flash and even turning off the continuous focus (which you don't really need for static subjects) can also help to conserve battery power.

Charging your battery regularly is probably the simplest advice. And you don't have to wait till it's fully drained. Just give it a top up charge before you know you are going to use the camera for the day.

good luck...

enegiser lithium

I bought a spare li-Ion battery for my Nikon D100 which cost me about £40, but I can still use standard Alkali batteries as a temporary back-up.
I'm inclined to agree with Petra on this issue....you don't know what these Chinese batteries will do to your camera. Yes, they MAY be ok, but are you willing to risk your warranty against an 'unknown quantity'?
I also have a little Samsung V700 pocket digital for which I bought a battery made by Hama which seems to be working ok (has done so for the last 2 years)

What is the typical battery life of the Canon Powershot G9?

I'm looking into buying this camera, but so far I have ever only used rechargeable AA batteries in my cameras. I have a zillion of them and always have the option to have new batteries on hand. If I get this camera, I'll only have the one battery, and that worries me. What's the battery life like?

Thanks!

Typical battery life of a Lithium Ion battery
No flash, no LCD screen = 500 shots (+/- 50)
25% flash, 50% screen = 400 shots
50% flash, 100% screen 350 shots
100% flash, 100% screen = 250 shots

as you can see flash is the biggest draw on the battery, with screen being second. by keeping your flash to a minimal (or using external flash with it's own batteries) you'll get decent # of shots (400-500)

What type of Lens and Flashes should I buy for my Canon Powershot G9?

I am new at photography but I really like it because it can capture moments in life you would have probably forgotten about. :)

I just want to know what would be best. Thanks for your answers.

The Powershop G9 is essentially a high quality point and shoot camera. You cannot swap lenses on it, although there are some add-ons. There are external flash units available for it, check the Canon site for all the info, it will help you figure out what is compatible with the G9.

What you also want to get are filters, especially UV and polarizers. These can both improve your images and act as a protector for the lens.

Is it possible to change the language setting on the software that comes with the Canon powershot G9?

I recently bought this camera in Japan. I was able to change the language on the camera itself, but when I installed the software onto my computer it automatically installed in Japanese. How can I change it to English?

Try this; uninstall the current software.
Click on:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=321&modelid=15669

Select your OS and download the software (English).

I have a Canon Powershot G9 and would like some advice on which is the best setting for taking pictures?

I am going to New York to watch the Joe Calzaghe V Jones Jnr fight in Madison Square Gardens.. Which is the best settings to capture brilliant pictures. It will be indoor, but with lots of bright spotlights etc. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You desperately need to study your manual (several times) as well as a few extra books on photography. You will take much better photos with a bit of knowledge about the subject.

Bring a tripod or at least monopod, crank up your ISO, use a custom white balance and keep your shutter speed short to avoid too much motion blur.

I am looking for a good camera. Any suggestions between Cannon Powershot G9 and Cannon Powershot SD 890IS?

I want something that fairly small, takes excellent pics, and has a good zoom. Any feedback?? I heard Cannons were the best?

Those are two completely different cameras. The G9 is intended to be compact camera for a serious photographer who wants a lot of flexibility and options when taking photographs. It's as advanced as you can get before getting to an SLR-type camera. The SD890 is more for a casual photographer - someone who takes snapshots. The SD890's goal is to be a small camera that fits in a pocket or person and lets the user take a photograph quickly and easily. If you just want to take pictures and don't plan on getting artsy or doing a lot of post-processing, the SD890 would be the way to go for you. The G9 is a better camera, but it might be overkill for you.

You mentioned zoom. The 5X zoom lens of the SD890 is impressive for the camera's size. Camera body size and zooming are a compromise. You would have a 10X zoom lens in the Canon PowerShot SX100, but that camera is more toward the larger end of the scale. It might not be much larger than the G9 though.
