Pentax Optio S1 Expert Reviews
The average person shopping for a £100 camera probably just wants three things: a brand they've heard of, a high megapixel rating and a smart design. Pentax's latest budget snapper ticks all those boxes, but it also includes a few features to impress more discerning shoppers.
There's optical stabilisation built into the sensor, which allows slower shutter speeds in low light without succumbing to camera shake. This is an essential feature these days as it helps in the battle against noise, which is so often exacerbated by high-megapixel sensors. The S1 is one of the cheapest cameras we've seen to include it.
The 5x optical zoom is a little better than we're used to seeing at this price, and so too is the range of photographic controls. There's a tracking option among the autofocus settings, which follows subjects as they move around the frame. The usual white balance, ISO speed and drive mode options are all present, and a custom button can be assigned to any of these functions for quick access. It's even possible to adjust the contrast, sharpness and saturation of photos.
We're really impressed to see 720p HD video capture at this price. It's not the best ever example – focus and optical zoom are locked while recording, there was quite a lot of image noise and the Motion JPEG format gobbles up memory card capacity – but videos were still a vast improvement over the VGA clips from most sub-£100 cameras.
Photo quality was also better than most cameras in this price range can manage. Digital processing took care of lens distortions, and was applied to photos, videos and the live preview – the only evidence of its existence was that it isn't applied while the zoom is being adjusted. The automatic white balance was sometimes fooled by scenes with a dominant colour, though. For example, the camera mistook a green lawn for a green colour cast, and tried to fix it by giving photos a purple tint.
Occasionally, the white balance made some comically bad errors
Details were crisp, without resorting to the excessive digital sharpening we saw from Pentax's last budget camera, the RS1500 . Colours in bright conditions were smooth, with little sign of noise, but they weren't quite as smooth as from our current favourite budget camera, the Canon PowerShot A3200 IS .

Anybody knows where to download database for omniremote to make it work with Canon Powershot S1-IS?
I want to make my Sonly Clie works as a remote for my digital Camera Canon Powershot S1-IS. I have omniremote software, but I need remote database (the remote is Canon WL-DC100). Does anybody know where can I download a database for this kind of remote? Or if you have this remote and PDA, can I ask your help to upload the database? I really need it. Thank you very much!
No idea on the download but you can use the usb cable and the software that comes with the camera to remotely control it.
can you use a canon powershot s1-Is for a web cam?
is there any software available for this function?
or how is it done?
yes you can.
for this you cpu should have tv capture card port where you connect tha a/v out cord of the camera and view images on the chatting s/w
my canon powershot s1 eats up my batteries when its off?
I use rechargeable Duracell (2400mAh) and after a week of doing nothing, it dies.. anyone know why this is happening?
Probably not. What is probably happening is the batteries are discharging on their own. You can test this by charging four NiMH batteries and installing two in your camera and just let the others sit on your desk. after a week or so, test both sets using either a volt meter or attempting to use both sets in the camera. Typically, NiMH batteries do not hold their charge over long periods of time like Li-ion's do.
Have you tried the Energizer Lithium batteries. They are not rechargeable but they do last 7x times longer in cameras. They are a little bit more of an investment but they do last a lot longer.
As a side note, your camera has a recall on it for the CCD sensor. See link below. I think they are only fixing them if it goes out, but it is something you should know.
Is the Canon PowerShot S1 IS any good?
I have one but I don't know much about cameras, can you tell me if it's any good?
Read the pros and cons of this camera at the link below. You can also find an extensive review of this camera there.
Probably it's worst feature (or no feature) is that it DOES NOT have an AF (Auto Focus) illuminator/light. This means that it will have a lot of trouble focusing in lower light situations (indoors).
So, for best results, you should try to use it mainly for outdooors or if you have plenty of available light.
Use Auto (the camera will select the correct shutter speed and aperture).
Or you can use P (Program mode) the camera will still select the shutter speed and aperture, but you can adjust settings such as ISO, white balance, exposure compensation, etc.
I suggest you have a good read of the manual so you can fully understand the camera's various settings. You can download the manual for free from Canon.com if you don't have it.
Also, check the first link below for help on understanding digital photography in general.
good luck...
I have a Canon Powershot S1 IS and would like a telephoto lense. What is the best?
Unfortunately, I am quite an amateur at photos, but I love the versatility of the camera and can take great pictures. I'd like to be able to take more wildlife photos for my own personal enjoyment, but I am not sure what is available for the S1 IS. I looked at the Canon website, but the language is very Greek to me. I admit that I'm more a "point and shoot" kind of person, and would like to have a better understanding of the terminology so I can pick better lenses as well. So, what, in your opinion, is the best telephoto lense for the S1 IS and where can I find a site that explains the terminology? Oh, and here's a few of my shots with the said camera.... http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2584615880100650677osZrKe?vhost=good-times

For this particular camera, which I used to own, it is quite difficult to find any attachment that would do any better than what the lens on the camera can already do. The thing about attachments to the S1IS is that they aren't lenses, but just tubes that magnify the image. As well, you need to also purchase a lens adapter kit. At this point, you'd be spending $100 or more. If you were going to invest anything more than that, I would recommend selling your camera online or locally and purchasing an SLR camera such as an Olympus or Canon (whichever you can afford) that has many options for lenses.
Below is a link to a forum that brings up similar points on the lens adapters.
i have a "Canon Powershot S1 IS" and im having problems with the pictures i take?
when it takes pictures, they look like their bleeding. i thought the lens may have been dirty, but even after cleaning it my pics still come out in a blurry bleeding quality, i also though it might be a setting problem but after checking/changing them for several hours and downloading the pdf manual i still cant get it resolved. any help would be great
Could be your SD card. Get a new one.
If this doesn't work, maybe you need to get your camera back to it's factory settings (reset all).

Canon Powershot S1 IS vs. S2 IS vs. S3 IS?
I currently own a Canon Powershot S1 IS camera, 3.2 megapixels, 10x optical zoom, capable of 640x480 video w/ sound.
I recently stumbled upon the Canon S2 IS, the next generation update to the S1, for a seriously reduced clearance price at Sears (where i also receive a 10% discount). I bought the last 2, thinking I could sell at least one of them at a profit, but then I got to thinking, I should sell my old S1 in favor of the newer model. The S2 has got 5.0 MP, with a 12x optical zoom, and improved movie mode with stereo recording audio.
Bottom line, I picked up the S2 for $222.99. Rock bottom solid. Problem is, I love my S1 so much and it has been so problem-free that I don't know if I should risk going to the next model.
Furthermore, the S3 is now entering the market, but is still way out of my price range. Do you think S2 would be the best value? I've heard it can be buggy/problemous, should I even bother upgrading? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Long Question Short: Has anyone had any problems with their S2? Regrettable purchase?
Go here and read the review of the S3.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons3is/
It says that the S2 was a big step above the S1, but the S3 is a "minor upgrade" to the S2. 'Nuff said.
But, if you are terminally curious, read on down the page where they compare the S2 and S3 and tell you what's new and improved.
My daughter has had her S2 since last summer (2006) and has not had any problems with it so far. Well, she did let someone mess with her camera and they set it in some sort of active auto-focus mode, if that makes sense to you. I think it must be for fast moving subjects. Once we turned that off, she was happy again.
Canon Powershot s1 IS problems, help?
My camera is about 3 years old, and I've had no problems...up till this summer. Now all I can see in both the screen and the view finder are distorted images, black, purple, and white streaks flashing across the screen. I've read about other people online with similar problems, but no solution.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? And if it's necessary to be repaired, what costs am I looking at?
well this wont make you happy , but it has to be said
buy another camera

hi, i need to know if some one has or had a problem with a canon powershot S1 IS and what do you do with it?
the problem that i have is that everytime the lcd its either turn black or images are distorted also when i take pictures all the pictures are blured and distorted
The main problem that camera has is focus on monochrome views. You have to trick the camera to focus on what you want to shoot. First you take a picture of something nearby which is as far away as what you want to shoot. Then take your subject picture right away!
