I have a Canon PowerShot S70. Wide angle with good zoom in a compact digital. What would be good replacement?

My screen is a little flaky so I need to replace it.

From what I've read, the Canon SD880 IS is the closest thing to the S70 currently made, with some improvements, including image stabilization.

I am finding it difficult to buy the adapter with coupler,also proper Canon battery.I got adapter from shop on ebay but it was without the coupler which had to be returned and the battery fits but doesn't charge.I am loath to buy another OEM battery.I tried to get into Canon shop,but still cant find what I need.Can anyone help

Hi :-) ! Can imagine that you do not want to spend any more money. Do not know whether this will help you though as I do not have the faintest clue about it. On this site, they say the Power Adapter Kit ACK700 comes with it. Which one do you have then? Good luck!!!

I have a canon powershot S70 which is 2 years old, I dropped it. should I repair it or buy new?

It will cost 80 pounds to repair, but it is a brilliant camera and does everything I want. The only thing I could ask for more is the wide angle. It has 2.8 but are there others with wider settings? I would only pay about 150 euros for a new one if it had a bigger wide angle

Sell it on eBay to recoup SOME 'parts as-is' value, then buy a new one. Cameras simply get much better in two years. The S70 is 2 generations old now. If you like Canon, get another one, but get a NEW one! The SD700/900 comes to mind, but there are lots to choose from in Canon lineup today. STick with Canon if you are comfortable with the navigation and usage of the S70 since they have carried that forward into the new models.

Did anything break? If so, was it the LCD screen or the lens? If it was the LCD screen, I'd say keep using it, but try using the viewfinder more often. If it is the lens, I'd say buy a new one.

Don't confuse aperture (f/ stops) with wide angle focal length. Unless you accidentally typed that decimal point, the 2.8 you refer to (which might be printed on the lens barrel) is the aperture at the wide end of the zoom, and not the wide angle focal length (which is 28mm in "35mm terms"; if this is getting too complex pop into your local dealer for an explanation).

Anyway, you generally can't get wider than 28 mm (only a couple of decidedly average Kodak models come to mind). Probably the best cameras with 28mm wide zooms are the Ixus 850 IS (beware the newer Ixus 900 Ti is NOT wide-angle), and the Panasonic Lumix FX7 and similar models in the Lumix range.

The S70 is/was really excellent though. And Canon haven't really made a decent newer equivalent (the S80 has a nasty plastic shell, and has lost the wide angle!). At £80 for a repair, I'd definately go for it.

My camera wont record a video over 30 seconds when it has more memory available?

my canon powershot S70 has 999 seconds of video left but whenever i try to take a video over 30 seconds or so, it just stops recording. Please help!

Your higher quality movies are limited to 30 seconds in length. When the camera stops recording, you will have to press the record button again to start recording again. You can keep doing this until your memory card fills up.

Your high quality movie mode (640x480) isn't all that great anyway (only records at a very jerky,10fps).
Lower resolutions are available too: you can record up to 3 minutes at a time at 320 x 240 and 160 x 120, with a frame rate of 15 frames/second.

Newer cameras can now record video at 640x480 @ 30fps or better.

Can the sliding lens cover on a Canon PowerShot S50 be fixed?

I have had bad luck with Canon PowerShot cameras. I have an S50 and the sliding lens cover is broken. I also just had a sliding lens cover break on an S70. I still have the S50 and wondering if anyone knows if a person can fix this themselves. It just appears to be "off the slide." Thanks!

Of course it can be fixed. Just how much you want to spend is the issue. You can do it yourself if you are good at that sort of thing and are very careful. I would have to research this camera more to give you any more info. But, it can be done.
