I need a more sturdy camera than the Canon Powershot SD630?

My Canon Powershot SD630 recently broke, and the people at the camera store said it is beyond repair. I will be buying a new camera soon, and am wondering which camera to buy. I am in love with the interface, screen size, shutter speed and sleek design of the Powershot, but this is one of many times it has need to gone into the shop. Do you know of a similar camera (within the same size/price range) that has similar features but is more sturdy?

All cameras are delicate instruments. Do you have a small case for your camera? Do you always use the wrist strap? Are you sure to place it where it won't fall on the floor? Maybe you should learn to take better care of cameras. I have had a camera of one kind or another since I was 11 years old with a Baby Brownie, and I have never broken a camera or dropped one.

I have a Powershot that is 2 years old, and it still works just fine. I would stick with the kind you like and are familiar with, and just be more careful with it. Good luck.

You will either have to edit your images on the computer...or learn to compose correctly.

My camera got stolen a few months ago, and I want to get the exact same model, but I can't find a store that still sells the sd630. I'd rather not buy it from anything like ebay or amazon. I looked on amazon, and the cheapest new one is around 350 dollars, and I really don't want to spend that much if I don't have to. If anyone knows anywhere that I could buy a brand new, still in the box Canon Powershot SD630, PLEASE let me know!

It is an older model camera so many camera stores will no longer have it, but it is still available on line, new and used, at many locations such as eBay, Amazon.com, etc.
Do a Google search on line and you will get many results.
Don't pay much attention to the person who said not to buy on eBay. I have bought (and sold) many photographic items there with great success. You can often find the lowest prices there. Make sure you buy from someone who has had several previous sales (I normally consider 25 as a good minimum number of sales) and has really good feedback, and it is pretty hard to go wrong there.

How can I trick my Canon IXUS 65 (Powershot SD630) to keeping a wider aperture?

The Canon Digital IXUS 65 (sold as Powershot SD630 in the US) does not let you directly control aperture or shutter speed manually. The "manual" mode is really a program AE mode. Mine keeps giving me an aperture of f/2.8 when I'm taking photographs of buildings (and most outdoor shots, actually, but particularly buildings). This consistently gives me too narrow a depth of field. Does anyone have any ways of tricking it into keeping a wider aperture?
Duh, sorry guys! Yeh, I know I got my numbers the wrong way round... I want a narrower aperture... Wrote my question at 3 am feeling a bit tired and confused... Thanks for your answers though - you worked out what I meant!

Actually a wide aperture is 2.8 (small f number)......you want a smaller aperture (which is a higher f number).

You should perhaps try different settings...
You could press the infinity button (the one with the 2 mountains on it). You should press this button if your subject is more than 3m (9.8ft) from the end of the lens. It might apply a larger f number.
Also, adjusting the ISO will apply a different aperture and shutter speed.
The brighter the subject, the smaller the f number the camera will apply (which will give more depth of field).
Maybe you should also try some of the other scene modes or try adjusting the exposure as well.

No, you can not. It is only to upload.

How do you transfer videos from the Canon PowerShot SD630 onto your computer?

It will only tell me how to put images on my computer, not videos.
I got my question answered-nevermind.


P.S. I found it out on my own.

It should be the same as for images. Plug the USB cable into the camera and then the PC with camera on. Window pops up, choose View Files. Folders on the camera open up, look in the DCIM folder and then drag those folders to an explorer window on your PC.

As far as I know you can only adjust the resolution settings to crop to 4.4 megapixels.

This is described in the Shooting section of your advanced manual under "Changing Colors." This is a listing of the menu steps, but you might make out better looking in your manual at the pictures of the icons that go with these steps.

FUNC.Menu > Auto > Kids & Pets > [MENU] button > Color Accent > [FUNC SET] button > [DISP] button. Aim the camera so that the color you wish to retain remains in the center of the LCD monitor and press the <- button. (left arrow button) Press [DISP] to complete the setting and then shoot.

It says, "The specified color accent is retained even if the camera's power is turned off," and I don't know how to cancel it as I have not messed with this feature yet. Good luck!
