What memory card is needed for the Canon Powershot SD850 IS Elph?
On different websites it said different memory cards, and I need to know which one is the RIGHT one. is it possible to have more than one kind of memory card that is compatible with this camera?
You can buy ANY "SD" memory card. I'd suggest a Sandisk or Lexar medium-to-high speed card (like 60X, 66X, 80X or up to 133X) with at least 1 GB capacity, if not more.
You can use the newer SDHC cards and get up to 4 GB, too, but that's a whole lot of pictures to keep on the card. If you travel and want to put your whole trip on one card before you download to your computer, then okay.
For a single recommendation, if that's what you need, get a Sandisk Ultra II 2 GB SD memory card. There. It will cost $35-40 most places and it will serve you for the rest of your life.
Here's my stock answer:
Sandisk and Lexar are the best known memory cards for digital cameras. I am sure that the cards all pretty much perform the same, but these brands have a lifetime warranty for some of their products, so that makes me think they are built to higher standards. As far as day-to-day use, I have some generic and some of each brand I named and they all work. The contacts on the brand name cameras seem to have the equivalent of the "thunk" that you look for when you shut a car door to check it's quality, if you know what I mean. You don't wonder, "Is it in there right?" because it just feels right. I don't buy generics any more, though. I just end up getting them "with things" somehow.
Of course, you'll need a decent memory card and I recommend a genuine Sandisk Ultra II (60X) or Extreme III (133X) of at least 1GB - preferably 2 GB - for your camera. Lexar is another excellent card supplier and they have the "Professional" 133X as well as the Platinum II 80X to choose from. Both Lexar and Sandisk come with image recovery software that you copy onto your computer before you format the card and both have limited lifetime warranties.
It won't take any other type of card other than those.
As for brands, the best is the SanDisk Ultra II or SanDisk Extreme, but you can use other brands like Kingston, Delkin, Hoodman, Lexar, etc. Avoid cheaper ones, which may not be fully compatible or slower in operation. Avoid buying off eBay; stick to a reputable store and a reputable brand.
What camera do you think is better; the Canon PowerShot SD850 or the Canon PowerShot SD870?
The optical zoom for the Canon PowerShot SD850 is 4x and the digital zoom is 4x.
The optical zoom for the Canon PowerShot SD870 is 3.8x and the digital zoom is 4x.
Does this make a big difference?
I think the 870 is better.
I bought the 850 3 months ago and I'm going to get the 870 ASAP. The side scrolling wheel on the 850 is ackward to turn.
Also, the 850 has a viewfinder and the 870 doesn't. However, the 870 has a 3" lcd screen while the 850 only has 2.5". You don't need a viewfinder...there kind of obsolete anyways.
The difference in the zoom will not be noticeable at all.
The 870 has a wider angle lens which will allow you to take group photos without being a huge distance away from the people.
The 850 has a little better zoom. So it comes down to wether you'd want a little extra zoom or a wider angle lens...and also the above mentioned comparisons.
Here's a link to a side by side comparison of the 850 and the 870 from dpreview.
the 870 has the 3 inch screen
How do I get the minimum shutter time on Canon Powershot SD850?
The specs says that the minimum shutter would be 15 seconds. However, the lowest I can get on almost total darkness is just 1 second. Thank you.
I think the two above me missed the point of your question.
Long Shutter Setting on Canon SD cameras
It can only go as long as 15 seconds - not minutes - but here's how to set it.
Select the manual mode on your camera.
You can not use long shutter in automatic.
Press the "MENU" button.
Stay in the shooting menu (camera icon).
Scroll down to "Long Shutter" and select "On."
Press the "MENU" button to turn off the menu.
Press the "FUNC" button.
Scroll down to the +/- exposure compensation setting.
You will see the usual (-2)-to-(+2) scale, but you will also see the word "MENU" above the scale as well as a little icon of the moon and stars. This is a reminder that you have the long shutter option selected and that you press the "MENU" button to engage the shutter time selection.
Press the "MENU" button and the (-2)-to-(+2) scale disappears and you will see (1") displated in the center. This indicates that you are set to one second.
Use the scroll button (right-left arrow button - the usual button to make manu changes) to change this setting. You will find several presets and these are what you are limited to. They include (among others):
1" = 1 second
1"3 = 1.3 seconds
1"6 = 1.6 seconds
2" = 2 seconds
and so on up to:
15" - 15 seconds.
This will give you a lighter image and it might be too overexposed, but you can check your monitor and adjust accordingly and make additional adjustments to the time and try again.

*Also, a random tip about that camera: The face detection is BS and will just slow down the camera. I suggest turning that option off, as your pictures will be taken much faster bc its not looking to put stupid green boxes around peoples' faces. lol. Best of Luck! Hope I helped!!
How do i restart my Canon powershot SD850 IS?
The lens got stuck, I guess, and whenever i turn the camera on, it says "Lens error, restart camera". So, how do I fix this? Or how do I restart the camera?
Restarting the camera just means turning it off and then back on again, that's all. The camera should still be under warranty and you should return it because a lens error usually needs to be repaired.
The most likely cause of your lens error is that you have restricted the lens from extending in some way. That's why it's always a good idea to make sure you turn the camera Off in review mode so the lens won't automatically extend when you turn it on.
Anyway...plead the usual ignorance I suppose and see if the warranty will cover it.
Can anyone that knows how to use a Canon powershot SD850 help me out?
I would just like to know what mode i can put it on so i can take pictures that look somewhat professional. It seems like when i take pictures without the flash they look blurry.
Are these pictures inside or outside?
Your main problem could be you aren't letting it focus.
All you need to do is lightly press the shutter button (not all the way down to take a picture.)
On the screen it will show a box and then it will disappear and what you are taking a picture of will be clear. Then click!
If this doesn't work, you may have a shaky hand. Just keep practicing or buy a tripod.
which camera is better Canon PowerShot SD850 IS or Canon PowerShot A720 Is?
hi,
SD850 is 4x optical zoom and costs $220 and A720 is 6x optical zoom and costs $200. and both have 8 Mega Pixel.
what is the difference in this. and which is better to buy.
A720: typical creative compact camera, has full manual controls, more useful zoom range, can be used with filters.
SD850: typical stylish camera, but still very handy.
Both are very good, anyways. If you like A720's features I listed, go for it. If you want a nice camera with attractive design, choose the SD850.
Buy the Canon PowerShot SD1000 or the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS?
This is a birthday present for my sister. Shes an architecture student. Also, she wants a camera that gives realistic pics that does not distort the face, like what the Casios do. Needs: portability, excellent detailed pics of faces and buildings.
Both are very good cameras. I like the look of the SD1000 more , but I would choose the SD850 IS because of image stabilization. Image stabilization is very good for taking pictures indoors without flash and for taking pictures of zoomed in objects. Both cameras would give her portability, realistic pictures, etc.
Edit: Lol, I'm sure your sister would take better care of her camera than the person below.
What is the price of Canon Powershot SD850 IS in India (in indian rupees)?
Couldn't find the price for this for this model in Canon India website. But its launched in India already.
Does antone have the canon powershot sd850 digital camera. If so what do you think about it.?
I would like to know about the battery life especially. As well as the performance and zooming capabilities.
I do not own the SD850-IS and I have not seen one, but it replaces the SD700-IS, which I am rather familiar with, so I'll post my blurb about the SD700-IS. The SD850-IS is updated with more memory and the newest image processor, so we can expect that it will be better.

Canon Powershot SD700-IS
I think the COOLEST small camera is the Canon Powershot SD700-IS. It has 4X optical zoom (35-140 mm), image stabilization and 6 MP. I bought one for my daughter's birthday and I played around with it for a couple of days before I gave it to her. I was going to get this model for myself, but it was simply sold out everywhere for a couple of months when I was ready to buy. Maybe I should have waited for the SD850-IS...
I did a series of side-by-side tests to compare the SD700-IS and the SD900, just to see if I was still happy with my camera. The SD700-IS compares very favorably. Personally, I chose the SD900 images, but another "top contributor" here prefered the SD700-IS images. I found that I could use the "Vivid Colors" setting in the SD900 to get the "snap" that he liked better in the SD700-IS.

It costs $300, has good zoom range and the image stabilization to go with it. It's SMALL and good looking. Great LCD and it still has an optical viewfinder.

(In Europe, this same camera is known as the IXUS 800 IS, so don't let the label on the camera confuse you. This is NOT the SD800-IS, which is known in Europe as the IXUS 850 IS.)
The SD700-IS is being phased out as the SD850-IS is being introduced to replace it. The SD700-IS is selling for about $300 and the SD850-IS for $400, so decide... Read about the upgrades on this page and see if you want the new camera or the "old" one.
SD850-IS (IXUS 950 IS) Preview: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0705/07050702canonsd850is.asp
Many people will recommend the SD800-IS over the SD700-IS and I would disagree. The SD800-IS has a slightly wider angle lens, but the reviews say, "there is a slight, but noticeable drop off in sharpness towards the edges and corners in some circumstances." Also, the SD800-IS only zooms to an equivalent of 105 mm while the SD700-IS goes to 140 mm.
As far as cool effects, you get many options with the SD700-IS and other SD cameras.
"Color Accent" and "Color Swap" are popular options that can be used with either still photography or in movies.
- Color Accent - use this option to have only the color specified in the LCD remain and to transform all the others to black and white.
-Color Swap - use this option to transform a color specified in the LCD into another color. The specified color can only be swapped into one other color; multiple colors can not be chosen.
You can set "Save Original" to save the picture with unaltered colors as well as with the accented or swapped colors.
You can alter the colors, contrast, and sharpness under "My Colors." Here are the descriptions from the owner's manual:
- Vivid - emphasizes the contrast and color saturation to record bold colors.
- Neutral - tones down the contrast and color saturation to record neutral hues.
- Sepia - records in old-fashioned sepia tones.
- B/W - records in black and white.
- Positive Film - makes red, blue or green more intense. It can produce intense natural-appearing colors like those obtained with positive film.
- Lighter Skin Tone - use this option to make skin tones lighter.
- Darker Skin Tone - use this option to make skin tones darker.
- Vivid Blue - use this option to emphasize blue tints. It makes blue subjects, such as the sky or ocean, more vivid.
- Vivid Green - use this option to emphasize green tints. It makes green subjects, such as mountains, new growth, flowers and lawns, more vivid.
- Vivid Red - use this option to emphasize red tints. It makes red subjects, such as flowers or cars, more vivid.
- Custom Color - use this option to adjust the contrast, sharpness or saturation settings, or the balance between red, green, blue and skin tones. It can be used to make subtle adjustments.
