What is the difference between the canon powershot sd870 silver and black?

I am planning to buy the canon powershot sd870, but i was wondering if there was a difference between the silver and the black besides the color?
Thanks for the help.

Just the color of the lens barrel and the disk around the lens. The polished finish of the silver version looks more prone to scratching.
Btw, it's a nice camera - here's two in-depth reviews:

Well i assume not, only the colour would be different.

only the color

Grainy digital and optical zoom on Canon Powershot SD870 IS?

We just got a Canon Powershot SD870 IS. When we use either the digital or optical zoom, the image on the LCD screen on the back of the camera becomes extremely grainy, and it gets worse when we increase the zoom. However, when we actually take the picture, there is no problem with the picture.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this normal, and is there anyway to fix this?

Screen resolution on the backs of point and shoot cameras are pretty poor, which is why the image on the screen goes bad. The only way to get around this is to hook the camera up to a monitor, which is bigger and has better resolution.

I would avoid using digital zoom ( you can turn it off in the menu system) if you don't need it. Digital zoom will definitely reduce the quality of your images.

This is somewhat normal. I don't have that exact camera, but I have one like it. The camera does not take enough pixels to take a clear picture when you use the digital zoom. The optical zoom should not create a problem though. I'm not sure about the screen. Mine never gets grainy on the screen until I zoom in on the picture I just took. When I take the photo, the screen is always fine.

I would contact Canon and ask if you could exchange the camera or if they could fix it. I imagine they would since you just bought it.

What memory card to get for Canon PowerShot SD870 8 mega pixels?

I'm not very familiar with cameras so I need to know what kind of memory card I need. I have a Canon PowerShot SD870. I want to be able to shoot videos with it that last longer than a few seconds which it currently can only do. And you can switch out memory cards and still have all the memory on that card and put a new one in and they will not be deleted, correct?
Apparently I'm not very educated on the subject of cameras or technology in general! LOL

Yes.... Yes.... Yes....

Get two memory cards, 2GB each... Go to Best Buy and bring your camera with you.. THey will get you the right stuff.
There will be many options as to size of memory.. If its not disproportionately expensive, go for the biggest size you can and get two of them.. Always nice to have an extra.

Yes you can take them out and the info stays on them.. Many printers have photo capability and you can stick in the memory card straight to the printer and print away. Ink runs pretty steep though and at 19cents a copy, I upload all my stuff to walgreens.com and pick it up later. You will find that while you take a lot of pictures and have a huge collection of photos on your PC, you will rarely print them.... maybe for an old relative or a photo album (I have two photo albums that are completely EMPTY).

Most people are satisfied with you emailing them pics. A large memory card will help in storage till you get back to your computer, at which time you can "dump" them onto your hard drive and go back out and take more pics.

You camera takes an SD card. I would get a SD card of at least 2 gb. That will be plenty for what you want... and cheap.

Good advice from the others, but also remember how long you can shoot video is VERY dependent on how you set the video quality. Just study that section carefully in your manual about setting various quality settings for the video. I have a Canon SD400, (earlier model of yours), and I have the video set at the lowest quality setting possible. I have it set to 15 fps (frames per second), and at a size of 320 x 240 pixels. This gives 23 minutes of recording time on a 2GB card.

The video looks fine for my usages. Keep in mind, it is first and foremost a digital camera, NOT a camcorder. The video is really just an extra feature added simply because the camera can do it. If you really want good quality video, then you need a high quality camcorder.

Canon powershot sd870 is lens extends and retracts very fast!?

My 6 month old powershot sd870 IS is having a lens problem. the camera wasn't dropped or anything.
When I turn the camera on, the lens goes out but it retracts immediately. I don't know what the problem is. Can someone give me advice?
Thanks!
the camera turns on but i can't take photos because the lens retracts. plus every time I turn it on, the camera heats up!

Take the memory card out and see if it works then. If that doesn't change anything, make sure that the battery is fully charged.

If it still doesn't work then there is nothing more that you can try and you will need to contact Canon to discuss repair or replacement under warranty.

What camera do you think is better; the Canon PowerShot SD850 or the Canon PowerShot SD870?

The optical zoom for the Canon PowerShot SD850 is 4x and the digital zoom is 4x.
The optical zoom for the Canon PowerShot SD870 is 3.8x and the digital zoom is 4x.

Does this make a big difference?

I think the 870 is better.

I bought the 850 3 months ago and I'm going to get the 870 ASAP. The side scrolling wheel on the 850 is ackward to turn.

Also, the 850 has a viewfinder and the 870 doesn't. However, the 870 has a 3" lcd screen while the 850 only has 2.5". You don't need a viewfinder...there kind of obsolete anyways.

The difference in the zoom will not be noticeable at all.
The 870 has a wider angle lens which will allow you to take group photos without being a huge distance away from the people.

The 850 has a little better zoom. So it comes down to wether you'd want a little extra zoom or a wider angle lens...and also the above mentioned comparisons.

Here's a link to a side by side comparison of the 850 and the 870 from dpreview.

What is your opinion on the Canon PowerShot SD870 IS Digital Camera?

I'm considering purchasing it.
I was also wondering with those that have it whether the time and photo stamping is optional or able to be turned off, because I honestly do not like that
How fast is the delay? Is there a long delay for pictures, I tend to take a lot of action photographs.

It's a nice camera, but the Panasonic Lumix FX55 is slightly better, particularly in terms of optical quality (less barrel distortion, corner sharpness falloff and chromatic aberrations), and otherwise offering just about the same as the Canon SD870, but at a lower price.

What is Better cannon powershot SD870 IS Digital Elph or Sony t200?

Which one is a better buy, and worth the money more. and more practical... basically which one is a better camera?

Without a question the SD870 is a better camera.. both in terms of value, ease of use, and quality.

Does the CANON PowerShot SD870 shoot video in AVI ?

Also what kinds of Memory Cards can you use?

Yes, all Canon cameras record movies in .avi format. You can use SD cards which are available in capacities up to 2GB...or SDHC (high capacity SD) memory cards which are available in capacities starting at 4GB.
For recording movies, a fast card is best (class 4 or 6).
High quality movies (640x480@30fps) eat up card space quickly (around 1GB in only 8 minutes), so make sure your memory card is of a reasonable capacity (2-4GB minimum). This will allow plenty of room for movies and images.
I recommend either the Sandisk Ultra II (Class 4) or Sandisk Extreme III (Class 6).
Format the card before you use it the first time, and whenever you need to delete ALL images/movies in one go.

Can a Canon Powershot SD870 IS use an SD-HC card?

I'm switching over from a clunkier Powershot A540, which can't use an SD-HC card, so I really want one that can use them. I travel a lot to remote places and take hundreds of pictures/video clips at a time, so having a nice big card would really be nice.
Thanks!!

Yes it can. SDHC is just a slightly different format allowing more space on each memory card. Older devices may have a problem with them, but new cameras such as the SD870 have no problem.
