Canon PowerShot SD890 IS (Image Stabilization) Digital Camera Review

Canon PowerShot SD890 IS (Image Stabilization) Digital Camera Review

Anyone have a Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital ELPH digital camera? Thoughts? ?

I just got one today as a replacement for the SD 630 I think it was called and wanted to know what people think of it. Oh and if you know anything cool about them I would appreciate you letting me know because I hate reading owner's manuals. Thanks!

The SD890 IS is just another one in a long line of Canon's very cool, ultra compact cameras. I would advise you to read the User Guide, thoroughly. How else will you learn to use all it's features and functions, etc. Surely you can't expect someone to tell you how to use it for you?

I would also advise you to attach the wrist strap and always use it, because it's your insurance against permanent damage if you drop it (these little cameras can get a bit slippery at times). Also, you should buy a snug case to protect it (and especially the LCD screen) when you're not using it.

Check out the review links below. They walk through the camera's functions etc...and may help you learn all it's secrets.

Hope you have lots of fun with it...and if I didn't already mention it, READ THE MANUAL!!!!

Which should I buy? PowerShot SD770 IS or PowerShot SD890 IS?

Which one of these cameras are the better of the two?
I definitely like both of these cameras. I just can't decide which one to get. Some one help?

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Mega pixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.

http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

You may never need expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, but the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something above that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the second link in the information above for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

This could be the best slim line camera with a viewfinder and ... It's PINK, but it uses a $49.50 Series G Rechargeable 960mAh lithium-ion battery.

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

A friend asked me to clean and charge her new 2000mAh Duracell batteries as described in the next link. Those batteries are still going strong after four months of normal use and have not been recharged.

Click this link for other camera tips and complete instructions on cleaning camera and battery electrical contacts.

Most NiMH rechargeable batteries lose charge and should be recharged when not used after two weeks, but Duracell and RayOVac new formula 2000mAh NiMH batteries hold charge one year when not used. Also, 2000mAh batteries seem to have a longer life. Did not like these batteries at first, but have 12 over five years old and all are still as good as new. Higher mAh batteries (about one year old) still work well in flashlights, but won't start my camera.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (both hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged, format in camera, and don't delete or fill card completely. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.
http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Once you select a camera, read all about it in the owner's manual. You can view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links show most of the cameras out there with prices and make digital cameras work better with help on cleaning camera and battery electrical contacts.

I bought PowerShot SD770IS for my girlfriend, she is grateful for it and has not put it down ever since I gave it to her, its the perfect size and weight, it takes incredible pictures with the best resolution, I recommend this more than PowerShot SD890 IS or the other cameras for 3 reasons

1) Better resolution
2) View finder *which enables you to take pictures when it is very bright
3) Beter lcd screen *that consumes less battery time

Pros/cons/questions about Canon Powershot SD890 IS?

Tell me the pros and cons of this camera.
Also, does it have settings to make the photo black & white, sepia, etc.?
What other good settings does it have?
Is the 5x optical zoom really good or does it hardly compare to 4x optical?

Anything else you'd like to share is appreciated.

Canon Powershot SD890IS

Pros:
1) 10-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality poster-size prints

2) 5x optical image-stabilized zoom

3) Face Detection; Motion Detection Technology automatically reduces blur

4) 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II screen for bright, accurate color and wide viewing angle

5) Captures images to SD/SDHC, MMC/MMC Plus/HC MMC Plus memory cards (not included)

Cons (All minor):
1) Charging requires the removal of the battery from the camera, and it being inserted into a separate battery charger. I'm accustomed to my old sony camera, where it charges in it's own cradle.

2) The power button itself requires some precision to activate. It's not difficult, or annoying to use, but again, I'm comparing it to my older sony camera, where it was a quick, simple flip.

3) The menuing system can be somewhat daunting to a new or novice user. Depending what mode your camera is in will change what menu options you're presented with. Using the camera & reading the manual will help with the familiarity process.

4) The spin dial (or whatever it's called). I have yet to see what benefit this dial has over the conventional directional pad. It's almost like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's quite helpful when you want to quickly flip through photos you've taken on the camera. On the other hand, it becomes challenging when trying to change scenes in scene mode, or when changing functions in the manual mode.

Overall, I love this canon sd890. I bought it just before going on vacation, and was continually amazed by the quality of the photos and shutter speed performance throughout the trip. While traveling on a tour bus, I was able to take crystal clear photos of the countryside landscape, while the bus was traveling at about 60mph. Great camera for the price!

Pros:
Bright LCD,
Lightweight/Portable,
Durable,
Quick startup time
Good image quality

Cons:

Poor Low-Light Performance
Bad auto modes

Any of Canon's SD models are excellent. You should be very happy with the SD890 IS. It has the usual features (black & white, sepia, Color Accent, Color Swap, etc).

Like most compact cameras, low light performance (using higher ISOs)might be a challenge, but other than that it will perform well.

p.s. make sure you attach the wrist strap and make sure you always use it. Because these ultra compact cameras can be a little slippery at times and using the strap is your insurance against dropping it.

You will also need to buy a fast SD or SDHC memory card (2-4GB is a good minimum capacity). Format it when you first insert it in your camera and whenever you want to delete all files from it.

Which is better... Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Silver vs. PowerShot SD1100 IS Rhythm & Blue?

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Digital_Point_Shoot/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A1494444

both are excellent

All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......

The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

Canon Powershot SD890 blurry!?

When I dont have flash on unless it's completley still and absolutley nothings moving it takes a good pic..but when ppl walk and stuff its blurry. How can i fix this? or is this just how the camera is? PLEASE HELP~!

Maybe they're something on your lense
try cleaning it off.
If it still does that, it's just the camera.

Hold the camera still and tell the people not to move. Check your manual to see if you can speed up the shutter, that can help when capturing moving objects.

Canon Powershot SD890 IS Silver... is it a good camera?

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Digital_Point_Shoot/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A1555338

One of my friends have that camera and it is wonderful, especially with the 'Color Accent' feature. But you might also want to check out the cameras at Nikon that are the same price and compare them. Such as the new Nikon Coolpix S60 with it's touch screen, for the same price. The Nikon S610 for a lower price. It's good to compare and see what you really want in a camera.

Hi everyone, which camera is better the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5.?

I have read reviews on the both cameras and i have seen it said that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 allows only 11 second clips at a time. I haven't got anything on the canon powershot yet but i want a small, stylish camera with good optical zoom and video. I want to take videos and i know some digital cameras allow 30 plus Min's for video. I do not mind buying a larger memory card if that is the problem, but i want to be able to record at least 15 mins straight. Thank you for your help.
Hi thanks, for the answer but i am not a video editor or a professional. I just want to be able to make a nice video of about 15 mins or so you know. For example to film a performace on stage or an event and i don't want a camcorder, or at least not yet. i have a friend with a digital camera that can film for long periods according to the memory it has remaining. I just want to know if i can do that with any of these cameras so I can know which one to buy.
can they both record continously. eg for 15 mins straight.

The are both fine cameras ... I am curious about why you would want to shoot video of nearly 30 minutes.

As a former videographer, I can tell you that over 90% of the video "takes" were in the range of from 10 to 90 seconds long. That makes the video editors job so much easier, since they don't have to look though so much video just to find the shots they need to put together a ten to fifteen minute short or 30 spot.

Since you are going to be both the shooter and editor, make it easy on yourself and block the shots before you start shooting and then keep each take shorter than a half an hour.

Does anyone have the canon powershot SD890 SI camera ??

Okay well i was wondering if it was possible to take a picture of someone with them being super clear & the background being blurry.
i checked the book but i didn't understand & it mixed me all up.
Does anyone know how to do this effect: http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/8171/bluryybgmz6.jpg
with this camera: http://www.canon.ca/english/index-products.asp?lng=en&prodid=1314&sgid=23&gid=2&ovr=1

PLEASE HELP!!

This is generally done with a very large aperture (small f-stop number).

According to dpreview.com, there's no aperture priority setting on that camera, making the idea of setting your own aperture to be right out the window. If it has a portrait mode (usually looks like a face in profile or something), try that.

Canon powershot comparison: A720 IS vs. SD890 IS - which is better?

I'm trying to figure out which gives the best quality photos - I like taking all kinds of pictures including close ups. I rarely use flash so I'm not concerned with the issues the 720 has with that.

The 720 has 8mp, 6x zoom, and 1/2.5" CCD while the 890 has 10mp, 5x zoom, and 1/2.3" CCD. Thanks for your help!

:-D

These two cameras are a little different from one another. The SD890 IS is basically a 100% ultra compact, point & shoot camera (with very limited manual control) and the A720 IS has the inclusion of full manual controls (aperture & shutter priority).

Even though the SD890 IS has a marginally larger sensor, you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

In regards to shooting in low light (no flash), I think neither camera will give you satisfaction, because neither has good high ISO capability (which is required for low light, no flash shooting). Even at ISO 200 you start getting lots of noise...so you may need to rethink your choices. But, either should be perfectly fine shooting in good outdoor lighting.

You can see ISO test results (in low light) in the links below...

Which cannon powershot digital camera is the best?

I'm not sure which of the cannon cameras are better. I know that there's the cannon powershot sd1000, sd750, sd850... I think I heard there's a sd890. Well if there's another cannon and it's better than the ones I've mentioned then i would like to know which that is. Thanks!

The canon sd 890 is the best of the four b/c when your looking for a camera remember three simple specs to look for...

- # of Mega Pixels
- Optical Zoom
- Price

The sd890 has 10MP and 5x of Optiacl zoom thats already 2 out of 3 and I bet the sd is the priciest. That said when looking at price tags don't look for the cheapest b/c as they say you get what you pay.
