Canon Powershot SD990 IS Digital Camera

When you're ready to experience a higher level of pace-setting technology and image brilliance, the PowerShot SD990 IS Digital ELPH is ready ...

Does the Canon PowerShot SD990 take good concert pics?

I have a Canon PowerShot SD1000 and it doesn't do very well when it comes to concerts. The main problem is that I don't use flash and that makes the picture blurry. I have to hold it at a stillness that my hand can't achieve with out help. Does the Canon PowerShot SD900 have better image stabilization?

While image stabilization can help, it is not the cure for your blur problem although I just checked and neither the SD 1000 nor the SD 900 have IS ... look at the SD1100 IS or SD990 IS with manual controls

What you need is a camera that you can adjust the f/stop and shutter speed manually. You see, the lighting on the stage is such that the promoter can video tape the whole concert. That means that there is plenty of light to get good shots using a digital camera. You just need to be able to control the camera ... P&S cameras attempt to control all the exposures, so can be fooled by almost any thing that interferes with the way the cameras sees the scene.

I shoot about two or three concerts a year. I set my cameras ISO to 1600 and then meter the stage at the start of the first set. I meter the scene with the lens one stop down (to give me some depth of field and a little sharper image). That assures me that the shutter speed I am using is at least 1/250th of a second. I then set the mode to manual and use those settings throughout the whole concert. To correct for any slight exposure differences from say the lead guitar to the drummer, I also shoot in RAW. This gives me the ultimate control if I need it.

Not really for your situation. The problem is that concerts are dark places. In order to get the correct exposure your camera needs a slow shutter speed. Slow shutter speeds result in blurry photos when either the subject is moving or the photographer is moving. You can eliminate camera shake caused by you moving by using a tripod. Not that they are practical or allowed at a concert. Your other option which most likely wont be any better is to increase the ISO setting on your camera. The problem with this is that high ISO settings create noise or graininess in the photos. You also probably can't increase the ISO high enough to get the shutter speed you would need. You are right when it comes to the flash. Unless you are on stage you wont be close enough for the flash to be of any use. Sorry to tell you this but there is very little you can do unless you are in the front row or on stage.

PLEASE get the SD1100IS
its exactly the same as your old cam, but with image stablizer. So your pics will now be great

Try this in Google:

review Canon PowerShot SD990 IS

better put your question in google and you will get an answer...

The best site, I always find, is cnet.com.au - whether you live in Australia or not, it doesn't matter.

If they don't have a camera you are looking for, check out dpreview.com... or it could be dpreviews.com.

Should I get the Canon Powershot SD990?

I want a new canon elph camera for christmas. I can't decided between the 950, 1100 and the 990? Has anyone had an opportunity to use any of them? I already have read the reviews at two reputable review sites. Thank you!!

get the cannon 1100

yes

id go with a nikon

Canon is win
Whatever product is made, its usually my style =] i guess it should be ok

avoid small sensor cameras (point and shoot are to 99.5% all od this type) with more then 8 mpix.
Look www.dpreview.com cheep camera (90 to 150$) test posted today, you will get answers.
here, canons 470 and 590 made good figure and best camera was Panasonic LZ8.
So make up your mind and stay far away from 9 to 14 mpix if you look for a good shot. If you go for 400 to 600$ go DSLR with Nikon D40 / D60 or Canon's Rebel series.

Powershot SD990 Review:

I realize there IS no "perfect point and shoot camera". I suppose there can not be a PERFECT small camera due to the small size.
In recent months I have owned TOO many small point and shoot cameras including..the older Canon SD950, a Fuji F100FD, a Panasonic TZ5, Even an Olympus 1010 model..and lastly bought a new discontinued Fuji F30 off e-bay for indoor low light shooting. I am sort of running my own private consumer reports situation it seems. :)

This SD 990IS is maybe the best OVERALL point and Shoot I ever had. But, instead of all the usual glowing remarks Canon Elphs seem to get..I want to point out a few negatives or inconsistencies with this camera. I mostly bought this camera because of the new function..FACE SELF TIMER seemed like a GREAT and useful idea as I take more pics with my g/f, or friends, dog, whatever..on timer than anything else. Long story short Face Detection works THE best on this 990 of ANY other camera I have ever used. It's nearly flawless INDOORS. However I tend to use this Canon more OUTDOORS. Problem is is in rather bright sunshine like MANY cameras, Face detection has trouble. Simply, often it doe NOT detect a face..and won't detect the second face either. This is only in rather strong sunshine..otherwise Face detection and Face Self timer DOES work and works rather well. The lens is OK, but on such an expensive elph I feel there should be less purple fringing THOUGH it's not BAD..but it IS there...and also indoors ISO set above 250 or so tends to get a bit grainy. So much so, I set the megapixels to 10..thereby why did I need a 14.7 meg camera??

I have also noted to my eyes this camera is not producing the almost too vivid colors of most canons...DEEP greens...Deep blues. But I actually feel the colors produced by this camera are perhaps more natural than almost any point and shoot I have had so that's a good thing. Also a positive..this camera handles blown highlights (Too BRIGHT) and dark shadows better than most. To sum up..this IS a really good camera with REALLY useful features WHEN they work, ala face detection in bright sun.

I feel Canon and just about all the point and shoot cams presently out there are WAY too concerned about who's got the most meagapixels. I'd much MUCH prefer a camera closer to my OLDER Fuji F30 which BLOWS the doors of this Canon in low light no flash) WITH JUST 6 MEGAPIXELS..then a nearly 15 meagpixel camera with too much noise. The Fuji's lens sadly has THE most purple fringing outdoors of any cam I have tried, hence my search has continued. To sum up..in today's market..perhaps this 990is may be about the best OVERALL small cam out there..but as I pointed out..if you are rather picky..it has a few flaws and I feel it is a bit overpriced...BUT also a VERY good camera which will make most people quite happy. It has a nice metal body..and the battery lasts a LONG time..another plus!

Cybershot DSC-T700 Review:

I preordered my camera in red and was a little disappointed in the saturation of the red because it's slightly pink. The color images online are pretty close so if you're not sure, go to a store and check it out first. I was only hoping that it would turn out to be a deeper red.

On a positive note, I love the ease of this camera. I especially love the scene+ option that automatically takes an extra picture with automatic adjustments during certain lighting conditions. This makes your picture a little more foolproof. The automatic programming is extremely smart and it can recognize the lighting conditions and make the appropriate adjustments. I've been pleased with my pictures so far just on automatic and I haven't had to make any adjustments yet, but there are a lot of extra features and programs to help you take great pictures in the snow, at the beach, etc. The second picture also manages to remove red eyes. I also have a Canon SD1100 IS which never manages to remove my dog's red eyes. I have to manually remove the red eye through its software, but it comes out distorted, scary, and not completely removed. This Sony T700 sucessfully takes a picture of my dog without red eyes.

On the downside, if you take a picture you like but have red eyes in the picture, the red eye removal function in the camera won't work because it is only set-up to remove red eyes in the faces

Canon PowerShot SD990 IS 14.7 Mega vs. Nikon Coolpix P80 10.1 Mega?

Hi everyone...

I want to buy a digital camera this Thanksgiving...I found these are on sale...

Both are: $399.99

on sale for:

Canon: $359.99 and Nikon is $299.99
I like the Canon 'cause it's small, with 14.7 Megapixel and 3.7 Optical zoom. the Nikon has 18x optical zoom, but it's huge, and only 10.1 Mega. The prices are $60 difference...

Which one do you guys think will be the best choice ?

thanks

If you just want a camera to take fun pics with and take everyday pics like w/ friends and family and even events like concerts and such, then you should go with the Canon Powershot.

But if you're planning on taking it to the next level and take more professional type pics then the Nikon is best here.

The really pro and higher level cameras are always big because of the lens, which are made to take really close up pics from the farthest distance. And camera's that are jsut for fun and everyday life are always compact (so its easier to store and carry around). So it really jsut depends on your preference and what you'll be using it for.

As for the megapixels and the optical zoom - you dont need to worry about the amount of megapixels really, not unles you're planning on printing these pics out. If you're ganna just upload your pics to your computer and put them on sites then a minimum of a 5 megapixel would be great, but if you're planning on printing out some pics, maybe 11 x 14 or even poster size then thats where the megapixels shine. And as for the optical zoom - the more the better! Optical zoom lets you zoom in closer to the object without distorting the pixels, it's great. never worry about digital zoom, the less digital zoom a cam has; the better! digital zoom will jsut pixelate the picture and the result will be very dissatisfying!

Canon Powershot G10 or Canon Powershot SD990?

So I'm having an extremely hard time trying to decide between these two. The G10 is about $100 more than the 990 so I was originally going to go with the 990. However, I would really like to have a new camera by Saturday and it seems that I can only order the 990 online. Now if I were to express ship it the total price will come out to be only $25-$35 cheaper than the G10, which I can pick up at Best Buy and not have to pay for shipping.

It seems like this should be an easy decision. Just $25 more dollars for the better camera. However, I already own a Canon Rebel which is a damn good camera, so I'm just wondering if I really need something as good as the G10. I'm mainly looking for something that is small and really easy to carry around that takes good photos. I really liked the 990 for this, but I'm just not sure if its worth the extra $40 some dollars I'm going to have to spend on shipping.

The G10 is such a better camera. If you're looking for a snap shot camera, the Powershot SD990 should be fine.

If you're interested in quality photos and learning about photography, the G10 is the way to go. It has the DIGIC IV processor which is in the new DSLR's (50D and XSi). It allows RAW shooting. It gives you options for Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and full manual. It also has a hot shoe mount so you can fit external flashes to it (430 EX, 580 EX).

I currently shoot with a 40D. If I were going looking for a back up / carry around camera, I'd buy the G10, no questions asked.

Planning on buying a new Canon Powershot, I need opinions..?

I formerly had a Canon Powershot A530, but broke it recently. Now I want a new one for my February Vacation. I'm only 16 years old, but love photography. On the downside I don't have much to spend. I researched these camera's and I want an opinion on which to buy:

Canon SD990 IS

Canon SD1100 IS

Canon SD880 IS

Canon SX10 IS

Canon SX110 IS
To narrow the search down, I think I can only the "SD" cameras.
oh and yes i've read the reviews at that site.

All your mentioned cameras are good and the SX10 IS is the best in the list. If you don't have much to spend, then here is my idea;
If you had an A530 it means that you probably have a battery charger with rechargeable AA batteries. If so, you can also consider an A590 IS. This is not expensive and it is capable of making quality pictures like SD series (or even better!)
Be well

I need a new camera for photography!!?

PowerShot SD990 IS This is what im looking into. I have a nice SLR but i need a smaller one that will fir into my pocket for those days I cant take my SLR. On vacations it's a hassle to haul it around. I need maximum quality, under $500, able to fit in my pocket, and the best there is. I dont want a thick power shot that is bigger i need small and great. Thanks : )

Canon G10 is a remarkable camera and can now be found for under $450 ,,,try B&H. My daughter bought herself one and I am tempted to put down my Canon 40D and get one myself. Hot shoe, shoots raw, the digital zoom is amazing (and I thought that that stuff was a farce!) lots of features to play with as well as manual! Great buy!

I need help to choose between this 3 Canon cameras.?

I have finally made my decision on 3 cameras to get. I can chose from:

Canon Powershot SX110
Canon Powershot SD880
Canon Powershot SD990
