Should i get a Canon PowerShot S5 IS or a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS?

I'm wondering which one has better image quality etc. Which one should i buy? It's between both of those...Are they both good decisions? Should i get a Canon PowerShot S5 IS or a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS?
Which one is well worth the money?

They're actually fairly similar, image quality wise, same sensor size etc.

Two things to consider. The S5IS has a handy dandy flip screen, you'll find it extremely helpful when shooting. It also sports a very good viewfinder, this you'll find helpful on bright days when you can't see diddly on your screen or in low light situation when you need to keep the camera steady.

How do I make the flash less bright on my Canon Powershot SX100?
I am a very pale redhead so whenever I take a pic it's like I put baby powder on my face haaha!
Lol I don't take those pictures with fish lips I might take one of my self though if i am bored or whatnot.

Try taping a piece of tissue paper or white paper over the flash. That may calm it down, but you will have to be careful of underexposure. Your camera may have a flash exposure compensation setting as well. Try some minus exposure comp and see if that helps.

Hy ! I recently wanted to download some pictures from my Cannon Powershot SX100 IS on my Dell Studio 1535 but i just couldn't do it. I installed the software, connected the camera (while ON) and i even tried to use the laptop's card reader but it was worthless ... Can you guys help me ? (I have Windows Vista Ultimate)

Is the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS good at taking sports/fast moving pictures?

I am very interested in this camera, but also into the Canon powershot S3/S5 which both have dedicated sports modes. I know this one does not but is it good at taking fast moving sports pictures?

I doubt if there is much difference between the three cameras you mention (other than the higher optical zoom on the S series cameras). It's true that the SX100 IS doesn't have a dedicated Sports/Action Mode button...however you can easily select your own shutter speed by using Tv on the Mode dial. For action shots you will need to use a fast shutter speed, e.g. 1/500 sec, 1/640 sec, 1/800 sec...to much faster (depending on how fast the action is). The SX100 IS has a minumum shutter of 1/2500 sec, so you will need to experiment a little.
You can also use the 'kids & pets' mode to help freeze movement.

To minimize shutter lag, try to lock the focus on your subject first, by half pressing the shutter button (follow them with the camera) and then press the button all the way when the moment is right.

You can also use a camera technique called 'Panning', to add interest to your action shots. A slower shutter speed can be used for this technique.
To select your own shutter speed AND aperture, select M on the mode dial.

The outside glass is perfectly fine, but the inside screen [the lcd screen, I think] is shattered. Where can I buy just the lcd screen, and how do I repair this myself?

It's something Canon stocks at their warehouse. They're the only one's who can do it, and I'm 99% positive they won't give/sell you the piece. Send it in to them and they'll replace it.

How do you set the timer so you can take pictures from a good distance of yourself?

It may be under drive mode indicated by the empty rectangle when you hit function set. You should see a circle with a 10, 2 or C in it. Those are the timers for 10 sec, 2 sec, and custom timer. Once you find the timer you want select it, find a place to set the camera, the hit the shutter button to activate the timer. It should start blinking and counting down.

I don't remember if the timer button is on the outside of the camera. So I'm using my Canon A620 to gauge.

3. How is the battery life? What batteries do you recommend?


Sorry for all the questions, it's just that if I'm buying a new camera I want to make sure I get a good one that's reliable.

It is a decent starter p&s. Do keep in mind that it is a consumer level point and shoot, so you can not expect the same quality you see in magazines and from professional photographers.

1. No, it does not take good macro pictures. In fact it doesn't take any macro pictures at all. Even worse - I haven't seen a single camera that takes macro pictures, or any pictures... Now you can probably take some impressive macros with it. With 1cm minimum focus distance in macro mode - you can get very up close and personal. But don't blame your camera. It's you who takes the picture!

2. Same for landscapes - it can't take them for you, but you may be able to take some nice ones. It is a bit long on the shorter end of zoom range. 36mm equivalent is a bit more than you may desire for great wide landscape shots. But it's not too bad. I am assuming that you will not be doing the landscape photography professionally, so you should be ok.

3. Battery life - haven't used that one, so I don't know. But as to battery recommendation - definitely NiMH (Nickel-Metal-Hydrate) with a good charger (look for smart chargers).

4. The golden standard for printing is 300ppi. That's 300 points per 1 inch of paper length of your printout. So in ideal perfect quality you will be able to print up to 8x10. However, you may go down to as little as 100ppi and still get decent results if the original image quality is very good. So at 100 ppi you will be able to print about 20x30 poster at marginal quality. The good news is - since nobody sticks their nose into this kind of posters, but rather look at them from the distance, you can very well get away with it. That said, I'd say that SAFELY you can print 11x12 enlargements, and beyond that is a gamble, given that this particular camera has a very tiny sensor, which will probably make some unpleasant noise/artifacts show up on anything larger.

I was going to try and save up $149 for a Kodak EasyShare digital camera in red, but I'm not sure about either of these. :p

First The Cannon Powershot SX100 with 8 megapixels is great I don't have one but my grandma does and she is technology challenged no joke and it's fairly easy for her to work. Also my friend has the kodak Easyshare and its also a great camera as a first camera but the cannon takes much nicer pictures but for taking pictures with friends the kodak is a great choice. But about the money thing I would say try working with your sister to raise money together and split it that way you both slowly save up and you help each other. Hope this helps you.
