Le reflex semi-pro Canon Eos 20 D Excite France

--> Photo: puuikibeach

Canon EOS 20D Digital Camera Review

This is a video review of the Canon 20D. Launched in 2004, it's been around quite a while but its still a pretty capabable camera. This review ...

Where can I find a store to repair a Canon EF 35mm f/2 Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR EOS 20D?

I'm having trouble with my Canon EF 35mm f/2 Wide Angle Lens. I think its the auto focus feature that is broken. Where should I get this repaired at?

What are the aperture values available on the Canon EOS 20D digital SLR?

Depends on the lens you get for your camera. If you get a f/2.8 the largest aperture is 2.8 if you get a lens thats f/3.5-4.5 the aperature changes as you zoom. The max for zoom lenses is f/22 at the smallest aperature (larger the number smaller the aperture.) I highly recommond getting a f/2.8 they are all marvous lenses that you get but they are EXTREMEMLY expensive. Excpet for maybe the 50mm f/1.8 but thats a prime or fixed focus lens.

aperture value is not related to the camera body ....it's related to the lens attached to the body ....

It has a flash lever prob though but I prob can getit fixed

It's a 3 year old model camera. It's second hand and with anything second hand you're taking a risk.
You can buy a 30D for only a few hundred dollars more or you can even buy a brand new Nikon D40 for less...

if you get the camera
I suggest you get the square deal warranty with it
the flash lever is already broken

i would ask more questions as to why he calls it 'newish'. i had a 20D for 3 yrs and the shutter assembly broke. canon replaced it for $200. its a common problem with the 20D after lots of use. google rapid fire 20D and you will see.
so because the assembly is replaced does that mean its new? i'd ask more questions. i sold my refurb for $300

I need a wide angled lens that will be compatible with both my canon SLR EOS500 and my canon digital EOS 20D.?

Because of the sensor crop factor on the 20D, it will require a shorter focal length to make the same image as the film camera.

Plus, to work on both cameras you'll need a lens designed to cover a full frame.

The 17-40 f4 would be a logical choice, but it only gives you 27mm or so on the 20D, which isn't very wide.

Sigma makes a 12-24 which may do the trick for you. There may be other choices -- google for them.

Hope this helps.

Canon make lenses compatible for both types. Also Tamron and Sigma make good ones.

As both cameras are in the EOS system any lens for that system should be compatible a 28mm lens will probably be the best but check with your supplier

I have a Sigma 15-30mm on my 20D and it's a great lens, giving 24mm at the wide end due to the 1.6x factor.

15 might be a little wide on a 35mm, bordering on fisheye but obviously you can zoom up to 30mm.

The Canon wide-angle is a very competent optic but if you are on a budget, I'd go with the Sigma as it can be had new online for £260.

Try asking at your nearest Jessops. They will help you more.

hi there, the canon eos 20d is a great camera. i own a 10d and think it is great.
i recommend you either get a tamrron or sigma. tamron lenses tend to be quite heavy but strong. sigma lenses tend to be light and untra amazing. I have a sigma 16mm lense and it can allow me to get great landscape views whilst i was in NY last year.
stick to those to brand and you shall be safe.
hope this helps you.

How does the Canon Rebel series compare with the EOS line and the nikon SLR's? is it good for professionals?

is it made for professionals to use or just hobbyist? I saw i can buy a good assortment of lens with it but has anyone compared it to other models?

I use a Canon eos 20d at work, but dont have the funds to buy my own for side jobs.

The Rebel is the EOS line, it's just the bottom end for consumers. If you know what you're doing, it's no different. You'll have less options if you like a lot of control over your pics, and less options for connectivity (PC sync, etc.).

No, it's not for professionals. But as you know the most important is the lenses. Put some L glass on a Rebel and it won't matter if it's an $800 body or an $8000 body. You may want to look into getting a 10D (used). Try the sites below ... they may serve your needs.

I know plenty of professionals (photogs who take pictures for a living) who use the Rebel series... sometimes as their backup, sometimes as lightweight travel cameras and sometimes as their main camera.

Take a look at www.dpreview.com to compare the different EOS bodies (Rebel included). FYI, I assume you are talking about a Digital Rebel b/c Canon does make a Rebel film camera as well.

Yes... less features but features isn't everything. Noise evolution and picture quality has come a long way. I would rank the following lower end Canons as follows:

Digital Rebel 300D -> 10D -> Rebel XT 350D ->20D/30D/Rebel XTi 350D (the XTi with a bit more MP and sensor clean).

Again, check out www.dpreview.com... they have all specs, reviews and sample images.

Good luck!

BTW: Lenses are VERY important but in the digital era, they aren't necessarily MORE important than the body. Back with film, any light-sealed box could take the same image with the same lens and the same film. Not true anymore with digital as sensors evolve, dynamic range gets better and better algorithms reduce more noise. The camera (or actually the sensor) is every bit as crucial as the lens you stick in front of it.

Canon Rebel XTi it is a very good camera. I consider it much better than Nikon same class. Professional or hobbyist ...it is just about if you get paid or no for the job...not even about skills or quality of your photos ... ;-)

IMHO: Canon is above Nikon.

Digital camera wide angle lenses Canon EOS 20D?

Looking for a digital specific wide angle lens ,reasonable quality, cheap price. At the moment I am using my old slr film lenses and of course digital magnifies the lenses by 1.5 this is okay with my 300mm lens making it a 450mm but my 28 has become a 42mm .I would really like something like an 18mm.
Cheers D

It took me a while to figure this out so I'll clear it up for you: the 1.6x magnifier will be there no matter what. Even lenses that are made for digital (i.e. the EFS lenses) will be subject to the magnifier. So if the EFS lenses are subject to the magnifier, what's their point? The point is that they only have to cover a smaller sensor. That means lenses can be built lighter, smaller and cheaper. Despite covering a smaller sensor, THEY ARE STILL SUBJECT TO THE MAGNIFICATION. Therefore if you want wide angle you'll have to get something like a 10mm lens and accept the fact that it's going to be an effective 16mm. If that's not acceptable to you you'll need to get a full frame camera.

"Correct" Exposure on Manual Mode of SLR?

Hello! I am currently learning how to take better exposures with this Canon EOS 20D SLR Camera. The book I'm reading (titled Understanding Exposure) says to set the f-number to f/5.6 and adjust the shutter speed until I get a "correct" (yes, it's in quotes inside the book too) exposure. Now, the camera does not tell me if I have the correct exposure on Manual mode, but it DOES tell me the standard exposure (whether it's +2 or -2). So is the "correct" exposure the standard exposure in Manual mode? Thank you for all the help!

And this is just an exercise on the first pages of the book. I have to understand on getting the right exposure before I start on anything else, right? :)

If you set your apeture on F5.6 and then change your shutter speed the camera will tell you when you have correct exposure.
There is a lightmeter you will see in the bottom of the viewfinder. As you change the shutter speed you will see it move to one side or the other. When it is in the middle you have correct exposure.
The cameras lightmeter is accurate in most circumstances. There will be situations where you want to over or under expose a little. If you don't know when you can bracket your shots. Take one shot over, one according to the meter and one shot under.

Also if you shoot in RAW you will be able to make corrections afterward if you need to.

I hope this helped.

Which is better, Canon EOS 20D or Nikon D40?

They're both SLR cameras

EOS 20D Lens?

I'm looking to experience a new lens (aka an excuse to play around with a new toy =P). I recently bought a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Digital SLR Lens a couple months back.

It's time to see things through a new lens. What lens have you recently purchased that you just can't put down?

I have been playing with a 17-35mm alot lately on a cropped sensor - 25ish-50mmish.......realy nice to be able to do 50mm shots (35mm cropped) and also being able to go wide as well, nice fast f2.8 is cool also for a zoomer.

Will old lenses for a film SLR camera work with a new digital SLR camera?

My mom has an old Cannon A-1 and an old Cannon EOS film camera, both of these cameras are from the 80s or early 90s and I was wondering if her lenses would work if I bought a new Cannon digital SLR camera such as the Cannon Digital Rebel XT or a Cannon EOS 20D. Or better yet if I got a new D-SLR would these cannon lenses work with any kind of SLR say for example a Sony or a Nikon?

The entire Canon A series, including the A-1 from 1978, used the FD lens mount system. That mount is incompatible with the EF mount (introduced in 1987) that is used on all Canon digital SLR cameras. So the lenses for the A-1 will NOT fit on a modern Canon or any other brand. You can get an adaptor ring for those lenses, but even then they'll have major problems.
The EOS camera uses the EF lens mount. So the lenses you have for that camera WILL work on a Canon digital SLR - and only on Canons.
Regarding the digital bodies, the Canon 20D has already been replaced by the 30D (essentially the same camera with minor upgrades), and there's a rumor going on in Canon user groups that Canon will announce a replacement for the Rebel XT any day. None of these cameras has a split prism focussing screen however, so focussing with old manual focus lenses can be quite tricky!
The Rebel XT and the 30D are both excellent cameras and good value for money, but if you want to compare brands look at the Sony A100 and the Nikon D80 (available as of next month). These 10 megapixel, $1000 cameras sit squarely between the Rebel XT and the 30D. And then there's the Nikon D70s, which has dropped in price to match the Rebel XT at $700 (making the Nikon the better deal, imho). And finally, at the budget end, there's the Nikon D50 for just $550 (without lenses or a memory card).
You can read in depth reviews for all of these cameras at http://www.dpreview.com
