3M Offers Retirement to 4900 in First US Cut Since 2009 BusinessWeek

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- 3M Co. offered early retirement to about 4,900 U.S. employees to cut costs as electronics-related sales slow, marking the company’s first workforce reduction since 2009.
The St. Paul, Minnesota-based maker of Scotch-Brite sponges, Nexcare thermometers and Novec electronic coatings, expects about 1,000 workers to accept the offer, said Jacqueline Berry, a 3M spokeswoman. Employees were notified of the plan Dec. 12, she said in a telephone interview today.
3M is seeking to reduce costs after lowering its 2011 earnings forecast in October as sales declined for electronic parts because of lower demand for liquid-crystal-display televisions. The company predicted earnings of as much as $5.95 a share, down from an earlier maximum estimate of $6.25. 3M on Dec. 6 forecast 2012 earnings of $6.25 to $6.50.
The company cut its workforce by about 5,800 people in 2008 and 2009 amid the deepest U.S. recession since the 1930s. An additional 700 workers left under an early-retirement offer in 2009, Berry said.
To be eligible for the new program, workers must be at least 59 years old with five years of pension service, or at least 55 years old with 30 years of service, Berry said. Eligible workers must decide by Jan. 31, and the reductions will take place at the beginning of February.
The company has about 80,000 workers worldwide, of which 33,000 are based in the U.S., according to a company filing.
Shares of 3M fell 1.1 percent to $78.51 at the close in New York.

Was in car wreck and estimated repairs is 4900. if it was 5300 it would be totaled. what if more is wrong late?
The insurance company will total at 5300.00. What if there is more wrong with it after. Should we get another estimate from a different place. This is who they suggested. It is not our insurance it is the other persons. Is it not to close to demand they total it.

You don't make the decision to total a vehicle, and you cannot "demand" a vehicle be totalled. Such a demand will just get the rules and the economics explained to you.
It is possible for hidden damage to increase actual repair costs, but estimates are usually pretty close. If hidden damage is discovered, it is also as soon as they take off the first panels they need to remove. If another $500 in damage is discovered after they have spent $3,000 already, they will call the adjuster and it will be approved. The exception would be to discover damage that cannot be properly repaired, that would make future operation of the vehicle unsafe.
If you wish to get another estimate from somebody of your choice, that is your option. It will likely be pretty close unless one estimator or the other is less experienced.

The televison that this is hooked to is not an HDTV, so it was set to proressive scan in error. Since I can not see the menu, is there any way to reset this?
I assume you have it hook up to component, easy way is to use one component cable and hook up to composite out on DVD and composite in on TV.
There should be a reset feature in your owners manual to remedy the situation with a reset feature.
