NASA ISS On-Orbit Status 5 April 2011 Space Ref (press release)

Servicing the running EarthKAM (Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle School Students) equipment in the Lab WORF (Window Observation Research Facility) rack, Paolo Nespoli changed the camera battery several times during orbit night when the system was not capturing images. [EarthKAM is an education program that enables thousands of students to photograph and examine Earth from the unique perspective of space, integrating the excitement of ISS with middle-school education. The student requests are uplinked in a camera control file to an A31p SSC (Station Support Computer) laptop which then activates the camera (wireless) at specified times and receives the digital images from the camera's storage card on its hard drive, for subsequent downlink via OPS LAN. There are 140 education groups participating in the current EarthKAM round, totaling 11,760 students, i.e., 112 US groups (9,964 students) & 28 international groups (1,796 students). The experiment uses the new EarthKAM software on SSC-20 (Station Support Computer 20) which replaced the version used for the KODAK DCS 760 camera. This is the 2nd use of the NIKON D2Xs camera by EKAM and the 2nd time that any images are being taken from the WORF.] After terminating the overnight battery charging for the KPT-2 BAR TTM-2 experiment, CDR Kondratyev used the KPT-2 TTM-2 payload for a one-hour health check of the TTM-2 Anemometer-Thermometer by taking measurements of intermodular air flow for comparison with the readings of ISS RS (Russian Segment) stationary air temperature sensors. Afterwards, data were downloaded to the RSE1 laptop, log tables filled out for OCA downlink and the equipment restowed. [Objective of the Russian KPT-12/EXPERT science payload is to measure environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, air flow rate) and module shell surface temperatures behind SM panels and other areas susceptible to possible micro-destruction (corrosion), before and after insolation (day vs. night). The payload uses a remote infrared thermometer (Kelvin-Video), a thermohygrometer (Iva-6A), a heat-loss thermoanemometer/thermometer (TTM-2) and an ultrasound analyzer (AU) to determine environmental data in specific locations and at specific times. Activities include documentary photography with the NIKON D2X camera and flash.] In the JAXA JPM (JEM Pressurized Module), Cady Coleman supported the NANOSKELETON-2 payload. [Activities included first setting up the D2X digital camera for taking photos of the sample bags, then mixing sample solutions for Bag Cartridge B and MEU (Measurement Experiment Unit) B (2), attaching the MEU to CBEF IU (Cell Biology Experiment Facility Incubation Unit) for Micro-G and starting incubation experiment #2, then closing out the experiment and stowing the gear. NANOSKELETON is one of the micro-G experiments conducted by JAXA for industrial application. The objective of this experiment is to develop a new functional photocatalyst named "Nanoskeleton" using self-assemblies of the surfactant. In the experiment, the TiO2 (titanium oxide) "nanoskeleton" is synthesized with a mixture of CTAB (Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) surfactant solution and TiOSO4 (Titanium oxysulfate)-H2SO4 solution under isothermal conditions (40 degC), to quantitatively investigate the effects of gravity during a chemical reaction process. Micro-g is needed to get uniform large pore sized structure and to clarify the effect of sedimentation and convection on particle cohesion. The experiment uses oil (TMB) to enlarge the pore size of the honeycomb structure; therefore, this experiment will attempt to clarify the effects of gravity such as the flotation of oil and convective flow, by evaluating the retrieved samples. Experiment output on orbit consists of the temperature samples plus images. The result of the experiment will contribute to high performance organic solar cell, water/air purification and so on.] Paolo Nespoli serviced the running BXF NPBX (Boiling Experiment Facility / Nucleate Pool Boiling Experiment) in the MSG (Microgravity Science Glovebox) by removing & stowing the tapes from both digital recorders, labeling & installing new tapes, and resetting the tape counters. [BXF supports two investigations in MSG: NPBX and MABE (Microheater Array Boiling Experiment). Nucleate boiling is bubble growth from a heated surface and the subsequent detachment of the bubble to a cooler surrounding liquid (bubbles in micro-G grow to different sizes than on Earth). As a result, these bubbles can transfer energy through fluid flow. The BXF-NPBX investigation provides an understanding of heat transfer and vapor removal processes that take place during nucleate boiling in microgravity. This understanding is needed for optimum design and safe operation of heat exchange equipment that uses nucleate boiling as a way to transfer heat in extreme environments of the deep ocean (submarines) and micro-G.] CEO (Crew Earth Observation) targets uplinked for today were Port au Prince, Haiti (looking left for this capital city. The city lies at the inner end of a long gulf. Scattered cloud was predicted), Caracas, Venezuela (looking left of track for the capital city of Venezuela. The metropolitan area of Caracas appears as an elongated gray zone, located inland of the coast. It lies at 900 m altitude in a cooler mountain valley), and Lake Poopo, Bolivia (looking left, just beyond two major salt flats ["salars"]. The effects of the present La Nina episode are being felt markedly in the high Andes where rainfall increases during La Nina [in antiphase with the well-known El Nino rainfall of the coastal desert]. Lake Poopo fluctuates greatly under the influence of the El Nino/La Nina cycle. Comparative images show the changes in Lake Poopo during a prior La Nina. ISS images of less than a month ago show neighboring salt flats with sheets of algae-reddened water [e.g. Salar Coipasa], a phenomenon seldom seen. Therefore, water levels of Lake Poopo are now of interest).

Nikon D2X - D1 - D80 compared

Comparing Nikon D2X - D1 - D80 Mostly just testing the shutter speed (FPS) Nikon D80 = 3 FPS Nikon D1 = 5 FPS Nikon D2x = 8 FPS* * High speed crop

Hi does anybody work with a NIKON D2X? We recently photographed a wedding and both D2X's were playing up.?

Perfect weather for photographs an even cloudy light. But for some reason some photographs were bleached out but really badly. We tried different settings and also flash off / on, manual etc. but still the same problem on BOTH cameras? We work with Nikon flashes and lenses. No problems with studio light in a studio environment? Anybode else experienced such problems?

What does the histogram show you?

yes i know him heres his bebo - nikonnere.bebo.com

Can you upload one or two photos to http://www.flickr.com so we can see what could have gone wrongly?

I'm looking to buy a new NIKON camera, should I buy a new d200 or a used D2x for the same price?

i have a d70s and love it but am looking to upgrade.

Same price? go for the D2x. Just check the number of shutter cycles on both cameras .. to do that you will have to get recent sample image files from each camera and then using a program like OPanda to "read" the EXIF data.

Then look for something that looks like this: Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera = 23456, the lower the number the better.

Unless you're into weightlifting, the D2x might be too much of a good thing. How about a used D200 and spending the difference on upgrading/ adding a lens?

Fhotoace, don't tell me that the thumbs-down is from you?!
You're a pro photographer and you use your gear to the fullest, but seriously, what does the D200 lack for a serious amateur that you'd have him carry around a D2x?

Here's my considerations:
* the image quality isn't better (spend the cash on a better lens)
* the D200's AF system and frame rate are already very good
* the D200 is also weather sealed (I've tested this in many rain storms... in combination with a weather sealed lens, of course)
* the D2x is no fun to carry around all day - a D200 with an f/2.8 zoom is already on the heavy side.
* you'll look like a pretentious nincompoop using a D2x for casual photography. The D200 isn't exactly inconspicuous but a D2x screams out for attention.
... the D2x has better specs, but for most people the D200 is the better camera.

It's great that you can buy a used D2x for the price of a new D200, and if those were the only options it would be a tough call. I'd probably get a D2x, too. But i.m.o. the smart move is to save yourself $500 and pick up a used D200.

Re. Opanda IExif: check that the D200 isn't too close to 100,000 actuations, or that the D2x isn't too close to 250,000 actuations. Those are the values that the shutters are rated for (vs. 50,000 for your D70s). It's roughly a $300 repair.

what is the optical zoom of the nikon d2x digital slr camera?

this camera has a resolution of 12.4 megapixels.

The Digital SLRs do not have any optical zoom. It is actually the lens that you buy determines the zoom factor. For example if you buy 28-105mm zoom lens - the zoom factor in digital terms is approx 3.5x.

Similarly a 70-300mm lens is same as 12x zoom. Some lenses are fixed focal length. There is no zoom on such lenses.

Go to" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_D2X ".You will get all information on the nikon d2x on this link.

You are thinking about a $2000 camera and asking a question like this?

Does the new Nikon D300 have a white balance sensor on the outside of the camera like the D2X and D3X?

The D2h and D2x/D2xs had a little white balance sensor placed on the top of the pentaprism.

The D300 and D3 (there is no D3x) do not have a white balance sensor on the top of the pentaprism; it appears to be handled internally.

ask this question tonight when Dr. Sam is around.
He has one.

Canon EOS 1D Mark II or Nikon D2X?

I shoot a lot of low light fast motion concert type events. I currently shoot with a Canon 20D, and am going to upgrade. What Camera would you go with?
The Nikon seems to be a better choice on price, but I've been told the Canon outperforms the Nikon. Any suggestions?

These are both nice cameras, but they are both 4-5 years old. They were probably used by professionals who shot a lot of pictures and now they want to sell their used equipment. Be sure that you find out how many shutter activations there have been. This is available in the exif data of the last picture taken, so don't take anyone's word for it. Shoot one more picture yourself and check. If they have over 100,000 shots, I'd be wary of either one. These things do have a finite life and 100,000 means there's not much life left.

I otherwise agree that you may as well get the Canon, since you have lenses, but with a qualification. Your 20D has a crop factor of 1.6X and the 1D has a crop factor of 1.3X. If you have "digital only" lenses and not full format lenses, you could have some problems with vignetting. Check the specs on your lenses and see if they are limited to the smaller sensor or if they are okay with the slightly larger 1D sensor.

You already have canon lens right? you would have to totaly re-invest in lens if you dont go with a canon.

From a cost aspect I would go with the same brand. It is really like choosing a Ford or Chevy. They are both quality Camera and if you are purchasing the equivelent model from either you will be fine

you already have glass just get a another body, in this case a 1d mark 2

Where can I get a Nikon D2X for less than a grand??

I know, it's amost rediculous to ask...but some people do! I wanna know their secret!

Good luck and if you do let me know where!! :-) Honestly you probably can find a D2X for less than a grand but BEWARE. When I was buying my D-1x's years ago, I found the REALLY Cheap and I was skeptical and e-mailed my buddy at Nikon. he said there are places that sell them for a lot less but they are called "Grey Market" and are not really Nikons. Nikon will not gaurentee them and will not service them and the people I talked to who had bought them had problems or when they tried to buy it the body was $X and the battery was $X and the charger for the battery was $X and the cord to plug in the battery charger was $X and the body cover was $X etc etc... after all was said and done it cost more than buying it straight from Nikon. If you want a good SLR and Nikon I highly suggest a D2X but if you're short of cash buy a D70s or a D200. I have a D70 for my personal camera and have amade a bundle with on the side gigs. The quality is AWESOME and it's very easy to use. You can go all manual. like I shoot, or go all program and have a $800 point and shoot you can change lenses on. When you get your lenses make sure you buy quality. GOOD quality. I spend more on glass than I ever have for a body. Bodies come and go and upgrade but a good peice of glass will last you a lifetime. I still use my uncles 50mm F/1.8 lens he gave me with my first FM2 way back in the stone age, and I still use it today on my D70 and D-2x's, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles but in the manual setting it still works. God Bless Nikon! :-) Good luck and Happy shooting!

How do you solve d2x/dt2 = K/x^2 for x?

This is an equation for the deceleration of a body distance x from another body (eg earth). How do you derive an equation for distance x against time t ?

d^2x/dt^2 = k/x^2
Integrate on both sides
|(d^2x/dt^2) = k |1/x^2
[Let '|' be the symbol for integral and ^ for power]
dx/dt = k.-1/x
Integrate again
x/t = -k. |(1/x)
x/t = -k.lnx
Solve this equation to get the relation between x and t.

Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control compatible with Nikon D2X?

Does anyone know if the Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control is compatible with the Nikon D2X? Thanks.

Are there knock off or non American circulation Nikon d2x cameras on the market to beware of?

I'm sure there are Nikon knock off cameras in the US, they are known as grey market products. Nikon, because of its intense level of popularity will often be grey marketed in the US, here's some info from NIKON that might help you out:

6. What are grey market Nikon imaging products?
Generally, a manufacturer works with a single importer which can sell and support their products in a given region. The importer usually has local dealers and distributors who are authorized to resell the imported products; this is called a distribution channel. Grey market refers to merchandise that is imported and sold by companies outside of a manufacturer's normal distribution channel. Nikon Inc. is the authorized importer of Nikon imaging products in the United States, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Nikon imaging products imported for the purpose of resale to any of the areas listed above are grey market Nikon imaging products if they are imported by anyone other than Nikon Inc.

7. Are grey market Nikon imaging products eligible for rebates?
No. Nikon Inc. does not offer rebates for grey market Nikon products.

8. How can I identify a Nikon imaging product as grey market?
Ask your Nikon authorized retailer. In some jurisdictions, retailers are required by law to identify grey market merchandise or otherwise disclose this information to customers.
If the retailer is selling the product at two different prices, the lower priced product is likely to be a grey market product.
Nikon film cameras, interchangeable lenses and Speedlights imported by Nikon Inc. will include a two-part warranty document in the package. The header area of Part One of this document reads: "This is your Nikon Inc. [time period] Limited Warranty (valid in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands)." Absence of this two-part warranty document is an indication that the product is grey market. Nikon digital imaging products imported by Nikon Inc. will include a single-page warranty document. The header area of this warranty document reads: "This is your Nikon Inc. [time period] Limited Warranty (valid in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Central or South America and the Caribbean)." Absence of this single-page warranty document is an indication that the product is grey market.

Goodluck!

what is the best lens to buy for portraits on a nikon d2x?

Exactly what the first poster said, except I wouldn't bother spending the extra money for an AF lens for portraits. The subjects aren't moving, your using a D2x, fully compatible with Manual focus (AI/AIS) Nikon lenses. You can get an 85mm for relatively little: http://cgi.ebay.com/NIKON-NIKKOR-85mm-F-2-LENS-USED_W0QQitemZ140205220681QQihZ004QQcategoryZ48556QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That example is f/2. There is little reason, again especially for portraits, you need to spend the money for the f/1.4 version, for two reaons: one: you'll rarely if ever use the lens wide open, and two: the f/2 version is sharper.

Due to the cropped frame of the DX sensor of the D2x, I see no reason for a longer lens than 85mm either.
