Wellesley College senior Eaton named D3 golfer of the year Boston Globe

Wellesley College senior Kim Eaton ended her collegiate golf career earning the sport's highest award: the Ping/National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division 3 Golfer of the Year. Eaton was presented with the trophy at the NCAA Championships.

The Shepherdstown, W.V. native was also named a first-team All-American by the NGCA, as well as a first-team All-Region selection. The All-American selection was the fourth for Eaton, as she earned the honors in each of her seasons in Blue. Only three other Wellesley College athletes in the program's history have accomplished that feat.

This season, Eaton was ranked first or second among Division 3 golfers in nearly every statistical report. She notched three tournament wins, earning medalist honors at the Dartmouth Invitational, the Vassar Invitational and the Jack Leaman Invitational. Eaton also finished second at both the Williams Fall Invitational and the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational.

"Kimberly's relentless determination and poise under pressure has inspired us all. She has graciously handled her pre-med studies and quest for athletic excellence in a way that few can model," explained coach Sherry Makerney. "Kimberly has a quiet confidence and easy going demeanor that has made her an endearing team captain and role model."

Eaton will graduate as the most decorated golfer in program history. Along with her four-time All-American and All-Region status, she owns two of the top NCAA finishes in Wellesley history, as she has twice finished 10th at the event. In 2010, she recorded the lowest round at the tournament, vaulting her up 11 spots to make the top 10. This season, she recovered from a slow start on day one, to move up 27 spots before the tournament was cut short due to weather.

"Kimberly and I both began our journey at Wellesley College four years ago and I joke that we are both seniors. I am sad to see her go, but I'm confident she will be successful in anything she pursues," added Makerney. "Kimberly is a champion and I am privileged to have been her coach. "

Whats the difference between D3 and D4 in an automatic transmission?

Ive driven standard all my life and i just switched over to my first automatic. theres a D4 and a D3 (as well as 2 and 1).. now i understand that D4 is to be used bc it gives u 4 gears to shift thru in comparision to D3, which is 3 gears... but is it ever appropriate to use D3 on a regular basis? Like city driving, is it beneficial to use it when city driving or is it just another option?

to the guy up there no automatic cars don't have a clutch because they don't actually change gears they use power transfer between gears, which is why the motion of an automatic feels so continuous as opposed to the small stop in motion in a manual gearbox. only automatic cars that have a clutch are the new nissan gt-r and the new lancer evo X.

The 1 in your transmission means that the transmission is locked on 1st gear usually never use this.

The 2 means your car is locked in 2nd gear use this when coming out on hazardous conditions i.e. snow, rain, etc. it will start your car moving at a higher gear which will in turn prevent wheel spin( loss of traction).
The D3 is used when climbing up a steep hill it will shift your car to a lower gear so your rpm's climb and you can maintain constant speed also use this when going down a steep hill as it will slow down your car, reduce wear and prevent overheating on your brakes. D3 is also useful in stop-and-go traffic because it will keep your transmission from switching back and forth between 3rd and 4th which burns more gasoline.
and D4 well that opens up all the gears for all your other situations.

If you drove standards (stick shifts) then it is basically you are limiting the highest transmission gear.

So if you leave it in D3, then the car can only use 1,2 or 3 gears.
===
Basically on automatics, you ONLY use them when you are pulling out of snow, climbing steep hills, etc.

when a car climbs a steep hill, and the gears is in too high, the clutch (yes automatics have clutch) can actually start to slip and eventually destroy the tranny.

Also as cars gets old, the weak engine can actually die if it is climbing too steep a hill on high gear.

Good Luck...

The only time that I would use D3 is if I was not wanting to shift into 4th gear for some reason. Like racing, maybe: you have faster acceleration in gear 3 that in gear 4, but may not be able to reach as high a top speed. Or if you are towing a heavy load, you may not want to be in gear 4, because it would be very hard to accelerate, and would be tough on your transmission to pull a lot of weight at a lower RPM. (Gear 4 will operate in a lower RPM range than gear 3 at the same MPH). If you are coming down a long, steep hill, you may want to down-shift to slow down your vehicle in addition to using your brakes. Perhaps also you would want to shift from D4 to D3 if you were having to pass another car on a two-lane highway and needed quick, powerful acceleration while already at a high speed.

Basically in D3 you are taking the car out of overdrive. As stated, it's good when towing or hauling a load. Also sometimes it will jump back and forth between gears when traveling at low speeds, so you would put it in D3 to stop the shifting.

Is the Nikon D3 good for basic photography or just sports?

I'm shooting with a D80 right now and I understand the leap that is the D3. However, I want to shoot full-frame images and this is really my only option. I've been told by some photographers that the D3 is just a sports camera and will be useless for studio /outdoor artistic shots. What do you guys say?

That's ridiculous, the D3 can be used for whatever you want it for. Just choose the lens that fits what you are shooting and you are good to go.

Any DSLR is good for basic photography including the D3. Where the D3 scores for sports is the fast frame rate in continuous shooting, but as most sports photographers I know 'wait for the moment' that is not as useful as it might seem.

The real beauty of the D3 spec is in the sensors low noise and wide tonal range which makes it perfect for any kind of photography.

Chris

I think the D3 is probably the best camera that Nikon makes at
this time, and it is good for everything. It has plenty of resolution
for studio and artistic shots, and the reviews that I have read on
this camera have all been great. I use a D300 as an all around
camera in my studio and it handles everything great, and the D3
is supposed to be a step up from the D300.

D3 is full frame - full frame is better for everything.

Have you seen Popular Photography's test on this camera?

http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/5047/camera-test-nikon-d3.html

Huh?

Why would someone say such rubbish to you?

Get some new friends.

If the D3 is good for sports then it is very good for everything else.

The D3 is simply the best pro digital camera Nikon ever made. dpreview.com said, "possibly the most compelling, capable and well-rounded professional digital SLR ever made."

It even has a mode to create a 4:5 image ratio to mimic medium format cameras. This was done with the studio photographer in mind.

Is there a digital camera comparable to the Nikon D3 but less expensive?

I am attending an art school for photography and need a really good digital, but the Nikon D3 which they encourage is way out of my price range--come on, I'm a student!! Is there anything nearly as good but less expensive?

I have to scratch my head and wonder why a school would want a student starting out in photography to go out and buy one of the industry's top end cameras?!?!? As an art director in a communications firm, we successfully produce photography with much more moderate equipment.

I can recommend Nikon D200 and D80 bodies as very cost-effective platforms to start with. They have more features than most photographers will ever use. The D300 is a fairly recent addition and exceeds the capabilities of the D200. What's more important for your needs is to spend the money on what's really critical... the glass on the front of the camera. Don't be talked into buying consumer grade "super" zooms and budget lenses. Do your homework here and find good quality prime lenses whenever possible. Once you've got the process and techniques down, then you can move up to a high-end body and take the lenses with you.

new nikon 300D is built on the same dx engine to compete with canon 5d full format camera

If your school wants you to get a D3, get one.

You want to graduate, don't you?

Canon 5D is the least expensive full-frame digital SLR available. I have two, photo quality is excellent, megapixel range is similar to D3. Okay, you won't get 10 FPS performance or ISO 6400, but at about $2200 or less for the body it's less than half the D3, saves enough to buy really sweet lenses. Even better, get the kit that includes 24-105mm f4 IS L glass, great all-around combo, saves a few hundred to get the combo.

get either
D80 @ $800
D200 @ $1200

Being a good photographer has little to do with how expensive your camera is. Work on your technique and save your money for good glass. You can always upgrade the camera later on. Buying the top of the line Nikon is overkill for someone just starting out.

The D3 is the first camera in a long time to actually exceed the hype. There's nothing less expensive that matches it - its only rival is $3000 more.

If you need the 35mm field of view, choose the Canon 5D.

If you don't mind the field of view crop, choose the Nikon D300 or perhaps the Canon 40D.

On a strict budget, the Nikon D80 is a good choice too. It's a great performater without the heavy price tag.

If you are really on a tight budget, the Canon XT and Nikon D40 will do what you need, but their megapixel numbers may not be enough for stock photography. It will depend upon your needs whether these are suitable for you. For most people, these cameras will suffice though and are still better than a point and shoot with bigger megapixel numbers.

D300 is almost the same with a smaller sensor...
You may also consider the previous D200/D2X generation, it's very good and far less expensive...

But, you know, even a $500 D40 or a second hand D70 is enough to learn anything about photography...

What's the difference between having it gear D4 than D3?

My car is automatic just wondering when exactly you should have it on D3 or D4? Also theres a just a 2 at the bottem. . I know the are they have to do with switching gears but when should you drive on D3 compared to D4? Does it save you gas?

D4 is what you want to use most of the time. That will have the transmission shifting into the highest gear (4th) when the speed and engine load are correct for it, causing the engine rpms to be at their lowest for the speed, and saving you gas. D3 would be used only when you want to make it easier for the engine to pull, as when climbing a mountain, of pulling a trailer uphill. But, mostly, use D4.

Just keep it in D4. Many cars with 4 speed automatics don't even show D4, just 1 - 2 and D.

D3 would be when you need a bit more power, maybe going up a hill, and it'd downshifting and upshifting too much. Sometimes it can't decide which gear it wants to stay in.

You'd also put it in D3 (or even 2) on a big downhill to let your engine help brake of slow you down, instead of riding the brakes.

Drive safe.

What is the purpose of D2 and D3 for on my automatic shifter?

What is the purpose of the D2 and D3 for automatic car's shifters and how can you take advantage of it to improve acceration?

D2 locks your trannie in second gear, and D3 locks it in third gear. Those gears work well on slick roads, ice, snow, etc. In some cars they will also act as a brake going down steep grades. This is not always the case some shift in to neutral.

Some people think they are smarter than the engineers that design the automatic trannies, and manually shift into a higher gear at a given point on the tact. Sometimes this is true, but it takes lots of practice, and if you don`t use it you loose it. But even then you will not usually out run the radar gun.

Lower speed more torque(power) when towing also used as a brake to slow engine(speed) down.

d 2 d3 is drive 2 drive 3 2ed or 3erd gear it shifts auto maticly so unless u know what rpm to shift at before u dammage ur trans or engine just drive it in automatic

1 is for going down hills so that your engine slows your vehicle and you can save your brakes.

2 is for climbing hills and gives your transmission an assist not to go into an upper gear until your speed needs the efficiency.

3 is for regular flat ground driving and the transmission figures when to change from 1 to 2 to 3.

Some intellectually-challenged people think that the shifters are for racing:

1 = start of acceleration
2 = when you start to redline in 1
3 = for when you start to redline in 2

and "R" is for RACE !!!!

Just kidding! R is for reverse. <grin>

Lenny

Ithink the D3 is a faster gear than the D2.

theses are your lower gears.

they are your lower gears.

Is it possible to install a Pioneer Avic-D3 in a 1996 Blazer LS?

I have a 1996 Blazer LS with all factory radio and dash. I would like to get a Avic-D3 but I do not know if it will fit. Does anybody know if it will fit, I will make custom fittings for it. Thanks.
This is a picture of the cars dash. It is the exact car.

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=4cacfg7

Making that fit would definitely require cutting both of the front dash bezel and the sub-dash structure. It's not just the height that's an issue; the depth is greater than the factory radio also. I'd suggest using a single-DIN unit like the AVIC-N3, with the appropriate mounting kit.

Edit: Actually, the factory radio comes with a dash pocket mounted underneath that can be removed for more space, so you probably wouldn't have to cut the front dash piece after all; you might actually need to find a way to fill in a gap around the new head unit. I'm pretty sure you'll still have to cut away some rear dash structure to take care of the mounting depth issue, however; and it would be tricky to make it look good in the dash.

What is the recommended flashgun for the Nikon D3?

I own the D3 and I have recently got into professional photography i have a job coming up and was wondering what flashgun is recommended for the D3 as i have just moved over from Canon.

SB800, SB600, or SB400 will work and you'll have full iTTL functionality.

Older Nikon flash guns as well as other 3rd party flash guns
(Metz, etc.) will also work but you won't have full iTTL feature set.

Additionally you can 'probably' also use the Nikon Macro flash (R1, R1 C1) systems but you should check directly with Nikon for that.

Did I ruin my transmission driving in D3 and what is the difference between D3 and D4?

I was driving home today from work, a 24 mile drive, and was noticing that my RPM gauge was running high at 4500rpm while doing 70mph down the highway. At first I thought it might be my transmission going bad, then about 3 miles from home I realized I was in D3 instead of my usual D4. I didn't want to switch over while driving down the road since I thought it would drop the transmission like all the stories I have heard.

What is the difference between 2, D3, and D4? I just know to put it in D4 and drive. Did I ruin my transmission by driving in D3? The car is a 1997 honda civic with 98,500 miles.

you did not go a great distance so its unlikely there will be any damage. D3 should be used for city (stop & go) driving ,while D4 is used for long distance and freeway driving. As a precaution pull the trans dipstick and first look at the fluid level. It should indicate the proper level on the stick.Second ,smell the fluid. If there is a burnt smell, look at the color of the fluid,it should be red.If it is dark red to brown, have the trans serviced right away.

What are your opinions about the sudden interest in the research community on vitamin D3?

Have you started taking vitamin D3 in response to the popular press on D3 research

I don't pay attention to the "popular" press, but I have been impressed with the emerging research regarding Vit D.
I have started to take a Vit D supplement, and believe that the "official" recommendations will soon follow.

What happens when the gear moves from D3 to R when the car is running with the engine stopped.?

Hi,

One my friend moved the car gear from D3 to R when the car was running with its engine stopped with a speed of 20-30mph. The car made a cranky noise and stopped...it restarted though but he can not use the reverse gear. What this would have caused inside the car? Can this spoil the entire tranmission....and if not then what level of damage it might cause.
