How to take an HDR photo with a Nikon D50

How to take an HDR photo set (3 photos each with different exposures) using a Nikon D50 digital SLR camera. Includes a walkthrough of the settings ...

Can you recommend a book or guide that tells me how to set my Nikon D50 SLR digital camera for specific scenes?

I am looking for a book or guide that tells me how to set my Nikon D50 SLR camera for specific scenes. The ideal book would show a photograph and the exact settings (shutter speed, aperture, etc) the camera used. I've read the manual, but it's a bit difficult to remember the various settings. I also want to avoid the "automatic" setting, in hopes of achieving a better shot. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Unlike P&S cameras there are no settings for specific scenes. The D50 is a fully adjustable camera and the f/stop and shutter speeds depends completely upon the effect you are attempting to archive.

You don't have to remember your settings. Just compose the shot and set the camera using the fine light meter on the camera, using the aperture to set the depth of field, or the shutter speed to either "freeze" the action or imply speed by panning at slow shutter speeds.

These are the things you will learn if you take a couple of classes in photography.

You may have noticed that the photographers you see shooting at professional sports games are not continually looking at notes to see how to shoot the next shot. They bring the camera up to their eye and then make any adjustments they need to make and then take the shot.

Hitting an exact shutter speed is why you need to learn your camera settings and read the manual You don't just assume that a book is correct as lighting, etc. is different. You can get approximations but that is it.

I recently finished 'The Digital Photography Book" by Scott Kelby. It was a great start for me as I am already taking college courses and am simply into photography as a hobby. He has an entire section of his photos where he explains which settings, time of day, lens and angle he used and why.

Ditto the other answers though. This book will not replace a course in photography.

How do I polish the screen of the LCD on a Nikon D50 Digital camera?

I just bought a used Nikon D50 and the screen has some scratches. Nothing major, just some light scratching that might be buffed out.

It has a glass protective plate over the LCD. Elvis is right, since you are not using the LCD to make critical adjustments, it really does not matter.

we should not polish screens
live with it
in time, you won't even notice the scratches

Yes, right, unfortunately it can't be polished, but it can be made a lot worse!
By the way, it could be replaced, but forget it, too, as it would cost way too much.

Is there a way to take pictures from my nikon d50 directly to my computer?

I want a way to take pictures from my nikon d50 directly to my computer so that I can view them on it right away. Is there any way to do this or instead to at least take pictures with my camera while it is hooked up? Whenever I plug it into the usb port, i can no longer take pictures.

Tethered shooting is available for the D50 through Nikon's Camera Control 2 software.
http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Imaging-Software/25366/Camera-Control-Pro-2.html

The D50 isn't listed as compatible, but it works fine (download the full 30-day trial to be sure) with nearly all Nikon DSLRs.

For a free alternative, try DIYPhotobits.com's Camera Control 2.1:

no i wonder the same thing but with d40

Where can I find a Nikon D50 at a decent price?

I ordered the Nikon D50 the other day and I've just been informed that the order has been cancelled. It seems that the price is going up everywhere! Does anyone know any good camera sites that still has the Nikon D50? Or can anyone recommend a good DSLR for a beginner in digital photography?

Lots of stores still carry D50 (B&H or BeachCamera). Just go to, for example, shopping.yahoo.com and search for it. The price there is quite close (around $600 for the kit). It might make you think that they just gang together to make the price and perhaps there is someone else selling the camera a lot cheaper. Yes, there are stores like that. But be weary of them before buying - they might not have what you think.
There are sites on the web that have reviews for the different shopping sites. Check there before buying for some greatly low price.

As far as what to use to start from: all the SLR cameras in the price range of D50 will work. For some reason they all cost roughly the same. If you are really really on the tight budget try a refurbished camera or a used D70. It will let you learn to make photos and then a bit later you will be more informed to make the right decision. Most of the cameras do almost the same aside from some bells and whistles, size and weight.
Other than that, D40 or D50 are great for beginning DSLR.

go to shopzilla.com
and type in your information
a long list will come up
good luck

Dream : you can find an " Nikon D50" at Sam's Club for
$350.00 or Best Buy, Comp usa, Curcit City, go to one of
websites under Retail Stores http://www.nikon50.retailstores.com

I was in the market for a new digital after my Nikon Coolpix 4800 crapped out on me. I wanted to stay loyal to the NIkon badge (I have an old FM SLR that I will never part with, and my dad just gave me two other old Nikon bodies with lenses). Unfortunately I just couldn't justify the price of the D50 as compared with similar models and settled on the Fuji FinePix 6000 fd. Fd means "face detection" where it can focus on peoples' faces in the pic. So far it's a great camera and a nice balance between a point and shoot and the fullblown SLR. (I would say it's definitely more SLR than point and shoot, but the lenses aren't interchangeable.) The lens can, however, accomodate filters, which is a big plus for me. I haven't read the entire manual, though, so it can do lots more than I know how to do yet. ;-)

How to turn off the flash on the Nikon D50?

I recently purcharsed a Nikon D50 Camera no instruction manual (waiting to see if I have won on ebay) just wanted to know how to turn the flash off if I don't want it? I have tried to take some close up photo's of my kids but the flash went off despite having pretty good light they look like they are dead!

Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Make sure you selected advanced mode instead of basic mode in your camera.

Also, camera sensors are not as sensitive as your eyes so you might want to increase your ISO rating to may be 400 or 800.

The D50's flash will not accuate until you open it up. In the menu, you will find a number of different options. Try them all.

fhotoace is correct except for the small detail that the flash has a mind of its own if you are in full-on "AUTO" mode. If you want to stow the flash but still have pretty much auto mode function, just choose "P" and push the flash down until it clicks into place.

How do I use Automatic Focus in low light with a Nikon D50?

I have been noticing that in low light, the automatic focus feature on my Nikon D50 has a lot of trouble. Is there any way around this?

There are 2 situations where an SLR/DSLR will have focus issues. Solid colors and low light. This is due to the fact that focus lock is acheived when a camera has a contrasting item for which it can determine where best to get the highest level of contrast bewteen the items, which it determines that an object is in focus.

You can carry a flashlight and shine a light on what you want to be in focus, prefocus, then turn the flashlight off and take the picture.

You could focus manually.

You probably are using the kit lens...you could try getting a faster lens. This helps because when you are composing an image, the aperture is at its largest setting(f3.5?) and only closes down to it's calculated or user set aperture right before the shutter is released. While this is just fine for outdoor, bright lit scenes, sometimes it is not enough for indoor or poorly lit scenes. a 50mm f/1.8 primt can be found for about $100. You get a lot in this package and you get WAY more than what you'll pay for it, out of it.

How do I start auto bracketing mode in the Nikon d50?

I've looked but can't find anything. I need step by step instructions.
I've looked but can't find anything. I need step by step instructions.

I want to do it so I don't disturb the camera when it takes the pictures at the different exposure settings because if I touch it it might move. I'd rather 3 pictures of the exact same thing, just different exposures.

Go to the custom settings menu (the one with the little pencil), scroll down to 12 BKT set and select whether you want exposure or white balance bracketing. This option is only available in P,S,A, and M modes.

How do I make the picture clear while the background blurry using a Nikon D50???

I just got a Nikon D50 and I am wondering how I can make the picture clear while the background blurry. Anyone know?

You need to use as wide an aperture as possible. The 'depth of field' (the range of distances that are in focus) is smallest at widest apertures. With the standard lens, you don't have a really big range, though, so it may not make a lot of difference. F3.5 isn't very wide-open.

If you get closer to a subject, the difference between the distance to the subject and the background will be bigger, so this will exaggerate the difference in focus.

Ken Rockwell has a good site that explains lots of photographic stuff in detail, and he is a long-time Nikon user, including the D50. The link below from his site explain the 'depth of preview' button (unfortunately a feature that the D50 doesn't have) with some explanation about how to vary the depth of field. There is lots more on his site so just look around.

How to sell my nikon d50 and How much?

How do i sell a camera?
Like, what do i put in description?
any skill or something you need to sell it?
how much should I sell it for?
i have a nikon d50 in perfect condition no scratches NADA!
with a 18-55mm starter lens.

You are not supposed to sell things here and I am not saying that you ARE, but if you enable e-mail, I bet that you will have a few people who would like to buy your camera right here.

Otherwise, I like eBay as a buyer and as a seller. How long have you owned it and how many images have you shot with it? How much do you think it would sell for? Use "Add Details" to include this information. I'd like the information so I can guide you towards the right place to sell your camera. Of course.
