How do I increase the ISO setting on my Olympus Evolt E-500?

I have an evolt-e-500 dslr. I have tried to take pictures of my daughter's gymnastics and son's hockey. With the hockey, I can't get the ISO setting above 400 and therefore the pictures are not in very good focus unless I get lucky. With my daughter, I get a similar issue, but it stays dark and blurry. I can't increase the lights in either location and I can't use a flash in gymnastics. Any suggestions on how to better catch sports in a moderately lit indoor area and how, specifically, to do it on a Evolt E-500? Thanks!

You can change the ISO by pressing the ISO button (down arrow on back of camera) and switching it. It won't let you go above ISO 400 unless you turn the ISO Boost on. You can do this by going into your "Setup Menu 1" and turning it on. You might also want to turn it to ON+NF (Noise Filter) to reduce the extra noise you're going to get at ISO 500 or above.

If you don't want to boost your ISO, you can take the pictures in aperature priority mode and open up the aperature as wide as it will go (low numbers like f/3.5 rather than f/22) This will let more light in, but it decreases your depth of field. You just have to be more careful about focusing correctly to ensure a sharp shot.

Also, if you can, use a flash or a bounce flash to illuminate the scene.

My Olympus Evolt E-500 Is not allowing me to put Rapid Fire on. How do I fix this?

I have Had an E-500 for a while now, but the Rapid fire in the shooting mode is greyed out, not allowing me to select it. How Do I fix this to be able to use it again?

The rapid fire mode is called 'Sequential Shooting' in the E-500. You can only use it in Auto or one of the manual settings on the top dial...but, not while using the Scene Modes or if you have Noise Reduction set to ON. So, make sure you are using the correct shooting mode.

Read Page 62 of your manual...and also page 187 for a chart that shows you in which shooting mode you can use Sequential Shooting...

While shooting with a Olympus Evolt E-500 at a concert, what setting should I use?

I don't know how to say what lens I have, but on it, it says Olympus Digital 14-45mm.
I am almost camera illiterate so I have no idea what setting I should be using when I am taking pictures at a usually low lit concert with a lot of movement. Really, anything would help! Thanks in advance

First, look at the back of your concert ticket. If it says: NO CAMERAS OR RECORDING DEVICES OF ANY KIND ALLOWED then you'd be wise to leave your camera at home. If you're caught trying to sneak it in you'll have to take it back to your car. If you manage to sneak it past Security and get caught using it your memory card will be confiscated and you'll be escorted out. Its also possible that your camera could be confiscated and you'll never see it again.

Low-light, non-flash photography is all about using a fast lens and a high ISO. Your 14-45mm lens is a slow lens with its maximum f-stop of f3.5 at 14mm and f5.6 at 45mm. With the ISO "Boost" on your camera the maximum ISO is 1600. This combination at f3.5 might get you a shutter speed of ~ 1/4 sec. Certainly too slow to hand-hold* or prevent any movement on stage from being a blur. Zoom to 45mm and your shutter speed will be much slower.

You have two possible options if you'd determined to try to take concert pictures.

1) Buy the MF-1 adapter so you can use the older manual focus Zuiko lenses and then buy the Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.4 lens. This lens used with ISO 1600 should get you close to a 1/30 sec. shutter speed - still slow to hand-hold and motion will still be blurry.

2) Spend approx. $2,000.00 for the Zuiko Digital EF 35-100mm f2.0 zoom lens. Actually this isn't a very good option since at f2 your shutter speed with ISO 1600 will be approx. 1/15 sec. as compared to the 50mm f1.4 lens.

If its possible for you to get really close to the stage you can meter and manually set that combination of shutter speed and aperture. Just don't change the zoom setting.

My advice is to just leave your camera at home and buy the souvenior program.

* The reviews of your camera that I read didn't mention any sort of image stabilization in the camera body.

Your best bet would be to set the ISO at 800 or higher, which will
give you some extra speed. You might get some noise and
sacrifice image quality, but you'll need the speed.

What is the aperture range on your lens? On the front of the lens,
it should have a number that looks something like 1:3.5-5.6. That
tells you how fast your lens is at the various focal lengths. The
lower the numbers, the better off you'll be for low light.

Shoot with the aperture on the lens wide open (lowest number
possible), and see what the shutter speed comes up as in Aperture
Priority mode (or whatever Olympus calls it). If you're at 1/50 or
faster, and you have a steady hand, you may do all right. If you're
not experienced shooting concerts, you should try for 1/100 or faster.

Finally, be sure to shoot at the highest resolution possible (setting
should say something like Highest Quality, Super High Quality,
Large JPEG, etc.).

Be sure you have a spare battery and memory.

My daughter has done quite well at venues that have allowed photography. She used her Canon G10 point and shoot, high ISO and sports mode, not flash to get pretty crisp images. It does drain batteries quickly, so bring a spare.

How do I use a Olympus Evolt E-500 Digital SLR Camera?

I have this really good camera, but I don't know how to use it! HELP PLEASE!

First, follow the link and download the user manuals. Go though them several times with your camera to get familiar with it. You camera has many different shooting modes that do all the heavy lifting for you. Essentially they turn the camera into a high quality point and shoot. You can start by adjusting the shutter and letting the camera make the other settings for you. You can also do the same with the ISO, aperture, etc. You would definately benefit from taking a class or at least getting a photography how to book (something like Photography for Dummies, etc.).

You will find that taking a class in photography will save you a lot of time and trouble and help prevent you from developing bad habits

Order the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, and while you are waiting for it to arrive read the supplied manual for your Olympus.

What type of Firewire connection do I need to purchase for my EVOLT E-500 camera?

The Olympus E-500 does not use firewire. Instead, it's most likely a proprietary mini-USB port. If you're looking to replace a cord you'd have to purchase either a genuine cable from a retailer or direct from Olympus, or a 3rd party cable specifically for the Olympus E- and/or EVOLT-series cameras.

Digital camera do not use a firewire connection, they use the USB cord that came with the camera.

Can I use a old Minolta 35mm film type lens with an Olympus Evolt E-500? What kind of adaptor would I need?

how old is the lens?

if manual focus its a MD mount, if its autofocus its a "A" mount which you use on a Sony DSLR,

Sony/Minolta mount lenses do not fit new Olympus DSLR cameras (like the e500)

a

Does the Olympus Evolt e-500 have a panoramic setting?

If so please tell me how to get to it.

If you are taking about the 16:9 image ratio, then no.

Can images shot with the E-500 be used to make panoramic images? ... then yes, but you will have to use software to do that and take two or three contiguous images.

Photoshop and ArcSoft have those abilities

1.Olympus Evolt E-500 DSLR Camera .8?

i,i am a novice, rookie or whatever you call in photography.but i
like photography, and love to take pics.(specially my adorable
daughter).i have always used point and shoot dig cameras nikon coolpix5.1 and currently i have canon snapshot 7.1.i also have a fullyautomatic olympus SLR film camera.that's my only expertise with SLR
cameras.now i want to upgrade to a dig SLR. AND I AM CONFUSED.
i have 3 products in mind and i dont know what to go for.

1.Olympus Evolt E-500 DSLR Camera .8.2 mega pix w/Two Lens Kit
(14-45mm / 40-150mm for $599.( the price looks just right,and
tempting, also with new feature they say dust reduction technology.

2.Olympus Evolt E-410 DSLR Camera w/Two Digital Lens Kit (14-42mm /
40-150mm) 10.2 mega pix.for $899.
(live mode, dust reduction and high ISO are its prominent features, they
say)

and finally,
3.Nikon D40x Digital SLR Two-Lens Bonus Outfit (18-55/55-200) 10.2
megapix for $949.

i am not able to decide.please suggest.

Among the three, I'd pick the Nikon. Better build quality and better lenses (as long as it's AF-I or AF-S) are two of the main strong points of a Nikon.

Also you might want to put a Canon D400/Digital Rebel XTi into consideration. It's pretty similar to a Nikon D40x, and it has automated noise reduction mechanism.

Teleconverter for Olympus Evolt E-500?

I know Olympus makes the EC-14 1.4 teleconverter for the Zuiko digital lenses. Will it work with all the Zuiko digital lenses, or only select ones? I am researching this for a friend who wants to purchase an Evolt E-500 with some lenses, and I want to make sure I have accurate info for her. Thanks!

You can use it with all of them. Just try to keep the the aperture between F/2.8 and f/5.6. If you open it up more, you could experience vignetting and if you stop it down further, you could experience poor AF.

Lens for Olympus EVOLT E-500 digital camera.?

Does anyone have any idea what kind of lens would fit an Olympus EVOLT E-500 digital camera? Do all olympus Lens fit this camera or another brand that would work? I bought one of these camera's but it didn't come with a lens so I am in need of one and wondered what possible brands would fit this type camera. Thanks
I chose the Olympus Evolt because I was able to get it at a really good deal. It was an estate sale and I got it dirt cheap...it just didn't have a lens...so am trying to find a lens. I was hoping ANY olympus lens would work with this camera..so that's why I was inquiring.
