Apple introduces us to the Wild World of Coded Magnets Patently Apple

Once in a while we're treated to new Apple invention that virtually contains a new self-contained world of possibilities and vocabulary to enrich it. It comes out of the blue and feeds our need for meaty new technology brimming with potential. Today is such a day. This is such an invention. Apple's invention reveals a wild world of programmable magnetic devices, and more particularly, to security for computing devices and peripherals that may be provided by programmable magnets. And yet, it reveals so much more than that. Apple envisions this technology eventually working into iOS devices to produce wild haptic effects using Ferrofluids on touchscreens and virtual keyboards. It will also allow Apple's iOS to present light based points on the display as a way to guide a user through a process like a teacher. This is wild stuff folks and it only scratches the surface of what's to come. Grab a coffee, sit back and really enjoy one of the most fascinating patent applications to have surfaced in some time.  Certain embodiments may employ coded magnets to attract or repulse ferrofluids to place ferrofluids in a particular place at a particular time. As one example, a coded magnet may be activated when a proximity sensor detects a finger approaching a touchpad or other surface capable of detecting a touch. (The exact mechanics of how the surface detects the touch are irrelevant; the present disclosure is intended to encompass capacitive sensing, IR sensing, resistive sensing and so on.) As the finger (or other object) approaches the surface, the proximity sensor's output may activate a coded magnet beneath the portion of the surface about to be impacted. This coded magnet may draw ferrofluid to it, resulting in an upper portion of the surface rising or bulging. In this manner, the touch-sensitive surface may provide visual and/or haptic feedback indicating the touch has been sensed. Haptic feedback may be achieved because the feel of touching the ferrofluid-filled bulge would be different than touching the flat touch-sensitive surface. Further, it should be appreciated that the sensing algorithms and/or capabilities of the surface may be adjusted to account for the pool of ferrofluid.

Olympus Stylus 1010 Digital Camera

Go to tiger.tv for more information. The Stylus 1010 is an ideal compact camera for intermediate users who want more advanced technologies that ...

What digital camera is comparable to the Olympus Stylus 1010?

Anything around $350.00 that supports a microSD memory card. Reason being is that I own a Stylus 1010 and I have had to exchange it twice now due to a popping noise on movie playbacks. I am now able to exchange for something else paying the difference if necessary.

I wouldn't get hung up on the memory card thing. Look at the Canon A series they are well reviewed and have an excellent reputation. If you must use your microSD cards you can get an adapter to fit them into a full size SD slot.

Where can I find underwater housing for an Olympus Stylus 1010?

I bought that camera like two months ago, and love it! Only problem is, it has options to shoot underwater but I can't find the underwater cover anywhere! The olympus website says it's discontinued. Guess they put out so many cameras whats new is old in no time.

I think this is the item im looking for : PT-042 Underwater Housing For Stylus 1010 and 1020

Thanks!

Voila...

strange for the housing to be discontinued on a newer camera. must have be qc issues or something. terribly unfortunate...you only alternative is an aftermarket "bag" housing...such as this one

lol@ always sunny... the MSRP was $250...and it regularly sold for a little over $200 online. now its discontinued, and you suggest a shady e-tailer selling it for $350??
yahoo should take your 2 points back...

Which would You prefer? An Olympus Stylus 1010 or the Nikon Coolpix S550? Which one is better quality?

The Olympus Stylus 1010 has 7x optical zom and 10.1 mega pixels along with 27 different shooting modes.

The Nikon Coolpix S550 has 10 mega pixels and only 5x optical zoom.

Which do you think has better all around physical quality?

Go with the Olympus. You'll be happy you have the extra optical zoom.

I'm a professional photographer and I've been using Olympus (and Canon) cameras for the majority of my career, and I've never had a problem with any of my Olympus cameras. They have excellent image quality and are very sturdy.

I have even dropped one of my old Olympus cameras a few times, and it still works like new.

I would go with the nikon

The Olympus 1010 has better reviews out on it. Have ever considered other cameras like the Canon powershot lines or the Panasonic TZ5, I would look into all those and read the reviews before making a final decision. Definitely the 1010 over any Nikon.

How do you get the Olympus Stylus 1010 to use the memory card instead of internal memory?

Just got this camera but can't seem to get pictures to save to the memory card instead of the internal memory. The "Back Up" feature under the menu is always greyed out so it can't be selected. User guide is not much help either. Thank you

You have to go into Menu and tell it to use the memory card

What's the difference between the Olympus Stylus 1010 and 1020 digital cameras?

As far as I can tell they're exactly the same (except the 1020 is more expensive).

Both the 1010 and 1020 have a
• 2.7" / 6.9 cm
• 230,000 dots
• LCD backlight boost

The 1010 has a HyperCrystal LCD
The 1020 a HyperCrystal II LCD

"The HyperCrystal II LCD offers a more accurate and precise image display, as well as an extra-wide viewing angle and increased visibility in direct sunlight" ... Olympus

Does anybody have an Olympus Stylus 1010 Digital Camera?

I was wondering if anybody knew anything about this camera. Rather than what the retail store's review says. I was hopefully going to get a new camera fairly quick and this one caught my eye.

I am planning to buy this camera tomorrow! maybe then i will be able to answer you question! so sorry! =)

Where to buy Olympus Stylus 1010 or 1020?

I have been looking since it was released and can't find anywhere to buy the new Olympus Stylus 1010 or 1020. Was wondering if anyone knew where to get it in Canada?

amazon
ebay

For the Olympus Stylus 1010 camera, it uses the LI-50B Li-Ion battery. How long will the battery last?

before it will need charging again?

If you have a look at your manual (or possibly on the website), you will probably find a table somewhere with estimates about battery life.

It depends on things like how much zooming in and out you do, and how often you use the flash.

Can I adjust the shutter speed on the Olympus Stylus 1010?

I found a youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J75W2xMRgVs&NR=1) video that says one can adjust the shutter speed up to 1/2000 sec, however I found the instruction booklet and I couldn't find how to adjust the shutter speed (http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/Stylus_1010_Stylus_1020_Instruction_Manual_EN.pdf).
I also played with the 1010 at the store and i couldn't figure it out. So, my question is to those of you who have the 1010. Can you adjust the shutter speed directly, and how?

No, you cannot.

There are no aperture or shutter speed priority controls on that camera ... in fact most P&S cameras are fully automatic ... you have to sort of fool the camera to get it to shoot at short or long exposures.

What to buy Cybershot W150 or Olympus Stylus 1010?

I'm really confused witch one to get :S
which one should i get? I'm really into self portraits

What do you have now?

If you have cameras that use either Memory Sticks (Sony) or xD (Olympus and Fujifilm), then there is your answer. If your old camera uses SD memory cards, then neither camera will be the one to buy.

Any camera that has a self-timer and that has manual focus, will be fine for your purposes.
