After XOOM, Motorola Unveils XOOM 2 & XOOM Media Edition VC Circle

Motorola has finally unveiled XOOM’s successors in the form of two new tablets XOOM 2 and XOOM Media Edition. Both the tablets run on the latest Android Honeycomb operating system the Wi-Fi versions of the tablets will be available in UK and Ireland in the second half of this month. An Indian price and launch date has not been mentioned by the company as of now but considering that the XOOM tablet is priced at Rs 29,999 (32GB Wi-Fi) and 35,000 (32GB Wi-Fi+3G) in the Indian market, we can expect the devices to be launched in the same price range.

“Tablets are quickly becoming a must-have tool for staying connected, getting work done and having fun at home and on the road. We are excited about these two new additions to our tablet portfolio,” said Victoria McManus, marketing director UK & Ireland, Motorola Mobility.

Motorola XOOM 2

The tablet comes with a 10.1inch high definition widescreen display (1280×800) with scratch resistant corning Gorilla glass and runs on the Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system (OS). It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and has 1GB of RAM. The internal memory of the device is 16GB but whether that is expandable or not is not clear as of now.

The funny thing about the camera is that Motorola has chosen to stick to the same 5 mega pixel auto-focus camera with digital zoom as in the original XOOM, but have opted for a single LED flash instead of a dual-LED flash (last time we checked dual-LED was better). The rear camera can also record high definition videos (1080p) at 30fps but the front facing camera has been reduced to a 1.3 mega pixels camera from a 2 mega pixel camera in the original.

The device is thinner (by 4.1mm) and lighter (by 101grams) than its predecessor and its dimensions are 253.9mm x 173.6mm x 8.99mm and its weight is 599grams. It comes with 3D virtual surround sound and a Splash guard for protection against accidental splashing. It has MotoCast preloaded in it hence users can stream files from their PC directly to the tablet and the company is also providing a stylus for better precision while using on the tablet.

Motorola XOOM 2 Media Edition

Unlike XOOM 2, this tablet has an 8.2inch HD display (1280×800) with scratch resistant corning Gorilla glass and a wide, 178 degree viewing angle. It also runs on the Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor like XOOM 2. The RAM (1GB) and the internal memory (16GB) of the device are also the same as XOOM 2.

The camera is also similar to XOOM 2; it has a 5 mega pixel auto-focus rear camera with digital zoom and LED flash with HD video (1080p) recording at 30fps. The front facing camera is 1.3MP.

The device is thinner (by 3.9mm) than the original XOOM and it is lighter than both XOOM (by 314grams) and XOOM 2 (by 213grams). The dimensions of the device are 139mm x 216mm x 8.99mm and its weight is 386grams. It comes with Adaptive virtual surround sound with multiple speakers and booming bass and has MotoCast preloaded in it. The Splash guard has been provided and the stylus can also be used with this tablet.

The tablets competitors in the Indian market should include Acer’s Iconia A500 (Rs 26,915) and W500 (Rs 31,990) tablets, Apple’s iPad 2 (Rs 29,500), BlackBerry Playbook (Rs 32,990), Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 750 (Rs 33,000) and HTC Flyer (Rs 36,900).

Our Take

The devices are better looking and more powerful than their predecessor, but the price at which they are launched will play an important role in their acceptability in India (where the tablet market is dominated by Apple and Samsung). Also, the company has not yet mentioned whether the tablets will get an Android Ice Cream Sandwich update or not.

What does the alternate name of the Olympus Stylus 750 mean?

The Olympus Stylus 750 camera has the alternate name Olympus U 750 on the manual. The U is in script. What does it mean and how is it pronounced? It seems to be used in Europe rather than Stylus.

It is a (latin?) character pronounced 'mew' like a kitty - spelled 'mju'.
Also the sign for 'micro' in scientific measurment and math and stuff...

Yes, that is the foreign model (non U.S.). Yes, they are the same.

How do I make movies with my Olympus Stylus 750 camera...?

What do I record them on?

You should be able to take movies. They are recorded on the XD memory card that goes in the camera. You may need to put the camera in the "Video Mode" by changing the back round dial to use the Video camera icon on it.

on my olympus stylus 750 i have the panorama option, how do i use it(how do i get panoramic pictures out of it

i tried to take photos with it but when i take the photo usin tha panorama option, the photo om the camera and on the PC turn out normal(not panoramic) how do i do it correctly?

When you set the Panorama option and take a series of shots, you then have to 'stitch' them together in the Olympus Master software on the CD that came with the camera. Just viewed individually, they will look like any normal image. When stitched together, you will have your panorama.

When you are in panorama mode, take care when taking each shot to get the overlap right, as it is here that the stitching takes place to create a seamless image. Overlap and direction guides should appear when in panorama mode to help you do this.

If the panorama option is not available, check to see that you have an Olympus xD card installed. The panorama mode only works with Olympus branded cards, not Fuji, etc.

How to get Olympus Stylus 750 repaired?

Does anyone know where to get Olympus Stylus 750 digital camera repaired? When I switch the camera on, the lens comes out 100% but no display appears in the LCD, the LED light flickers and the lens goes back 3/4ths of the way and the camera cannot be switched off. Unless I turn the dial to preview mode and then I can turn off the camera, on preview mode the LCD works. How can I get this repaired. This camera is out of warranty and I do not have extended warranty on it.

You can contact Olympus via their support website for a cost estimate of the repairs:

Check out this comparison page. Click on "In-depth review" and "Read Owner Opinions" for each camera. Be sure to note that the reviews are many pages long so you don't stop after page one. Check the sample images, also. You can enlarge these to full size images if you click on the link below the picture. You will have to then put your cursor in the white space to the right of the picture and click once. After that, you can pass your cursor over the image and it will turn into a magnifier. Click it as a magnifier once and the image will go to full size and you can really examine the detail or look for artifacts like fringing or noise. I'm sorry, but I guess the Olympus is too new to get it reviewed here, so there are no sample images, either.

Steve's has a little info, but it is not really a review and there are no samples: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/stylus750.html

Check out the Canons at Steve's, also:
SD800: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/sd800.html
SD700: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/sd700.html

I put the Canon SD700 in the mix and I'll explain in a minute.

The thing I don't like about the Olympus is that it does not have an optical viewfinder. This is the source of many complaints about digital cameras going through batteries quickly. I can't argue with the extended telephoto range of the lens and the image stabilization would really help at that range. But, the lens is somewhat slower than the Canon lenses, like almost a half a stop slower. This may not seem like much, but the advantage for lower light goes to Canon.

Why did I put the SD700 in the grouping? If I was going to choose between the SD700 and the SD800, I think I'd go for the SD700. The wide end of the SD800 lens has been criticized for letting the image break apart at the edges, so people with experience tend not to use it at full wide angle anyhow. That's what I've heard on Yahoo! Answers, anyway. If that's the case, then the advantage for thelens goes to the SD700, as it is good at all focal lengths and it zooms to 140 mm (equiv) while the SD800 only goes to 105 mm. This is a big difference.

Of course, the Olympus going to 180 mm (equiv) is quite an improvement over the SD700's 140 mm.

My bottom line? I don't really know. I'd compare the Stylus 750 against the SD700 in the final analysis. The advantage for longer zoom goes to the 750, but the advantage of having an optical viewfinder that would let you shut off the LCD if you want to save your batteries goes to the SD700. It's too bad we can't see sample images of the Stylus yet, because that would be the big difference to me.

I just found a review of the Olympus for you:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/OS740/OS740A.HTM

The professional reviewer pretty much only gives a preview, but go on down to the user review and read the pros and cons.

This really disturbs me:

-Severe chromatic aberation in the corners
-Surprisingly bad optics. Only a few small areas of the frame are in focus at any time.
-LCD very hard to read outdoors. (My note: And there is no optical viewfinder to use in these situations, so you are screwed.)
-Very stiff shutter button (My note: Sure to introduce camera shake; maybe even too much for the image stabilization to control.)

That kind of clinches it for me. I would not buy the Olympus. Maybe they will improve the camera through the model run, but it does not sound good right now.

Choose between the Canon's. I would suggest you look at the SD700 instead of the SD800. Okay, it's only got 7 MP instead of 8, but that's not a wild difference when you come down to it.

Petra will come along and so will TomTom and they will both tell you to buy the SD700, also.

Olympus Stylus 750 7.1MP Digital Camera?

Will this camera work with a Windows XP laptop?

yes it will

Which Camera? Olympus FE 240 / Stylus u 750 / Stylus u 780?

Is it worth paying around $50 more to get the second or third one? Or the first is good enough? I need it for common parties or picnics, not professional photos.

i'd go for the FE 240 if it's just for capturing memorable moments, but if you want professional pictures that look really good get the u780

Should i buy the Olympus Stylus 730 or the Canon Powershot SD 750?

both screens are 3in. i just dont know which one to choose. what is your personal experience on either camera? pleez help i need a new camera badly. also it has to have both mac and pc compatibility.

These cameras spec out quite similarly, but the Canon is the winner to me, if for no other reason than the fact that it has an optical viewfinder.

I lament the passing of the optical viewfinder and I would choose almost any camera with an optical viewfinder over one that only has an LCD viewfinder. Why?

1. You never have the option of turning off the LCD and these things eat batteries for lunch and spit them out. Why do away with the option of a viewfinder that has zero electrical drain?

2. It can be difficult to see the image on an LCD in bright sunlight, even if they are "new and improved."

3. You have to hold an LCD viewer out at some distance in front of your face. This is more conspicuous than I prefer to be all the time.

4. The need to hold a camera at arms length will introduce some shake. I like the idea of stabilizing a camera against my face when I am taking a picture. This is especially important with a longer zoom lens. No wonder "image stablization" or "vibration reduction" is necessary with these cameras. Not that there's anything WRONG with IS or VR, but it is really a requirement with LCD viewfinders and telephoto lenses.

5. Using the LCD to view photos after you've taken them slows down the camera quite a bit. You can't shut of the LCD monitor and still take pictures if you don't have an optical viewfinder.

There are not many user reviews on either camera yet, but go here and actually read the comments.

For the Olympus, a few said that the menu structure was tedious and the shutter lag was horrible.

There is only one user review for the SD750 so far:

Does anyone use the Epson Stylus printers; 400, 500, 700 or 750?

I had one of these with my old computer, but don't use the printer any more. I have a spare compatible cartridge that I no longer need. If anyone wants it, send name and address and they can have it for free, I won't even charge for postage, I just don't want to waste it. First positive reply gets the cartridge. Don't send name and address, just e-mail me and it's yours.

you can give it to a charity who sends them to african schools
