Sony a700
An introduction to Sony's latest DSLR camera - I fell in love with the camera ... Sony DSLR SLR Digital camera review a700 photography pixels ...

which one canon eos 450D or Sony dslr-a700p ? which one do u pick and why?
stick with canons and nikons for cameras, even though sony has a great rep, for cameras its the other two. I personally have a nikon, you should compare your canon with a nikon. Online reviews at amazon.com and the cameras googled will also give you reviews of PRO camera critics. My nikon was near perfect. These reviews are very reliable.
I'd pick a Nikon, because, well, I 'm a Nikon fan. But between those two, I'd go with Canon, because Sony just plain sucks.
Canon are being left behind, no innovation in any of their latest models, just count the times the word 'disappointed' appears in the reviews.
Personally I'd go with Pentax, but that's just me. Of the two you suggest I'd go with the Sony.
Don't forget your buying into a system, which is why I chose Pentax. Top quality, cheaper price, every lens is anti shake and a whole list of other innovations, such as the ability to convert a Raw to Jpeg in camera, digital as well as optical preview, you can bracket for ISO, colour balance, depth of field, as well as exposure, most Nikons can't bracket at all automatically.

I don't know about the other two posts, but any camera that costs $8,000 is going to be good. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, it's all the same. Comparable cameras have comparable results. And yes, I shoot Nikon.
The Sony A700 and the Canon 450D are two cameras in two different categories. The A700 is Sony's professional DSLR, while the 450D is Canon's entry level DSLR. Instead, try comparing the 450D to the Sony A300 maybe.
If I was going to buy between those two cameras, I'd go with Canon. Sony is trying to capture the professional shooters, which just isn't going to happen. Because of this, Sony does not have that many entry level lenses. Canon has a much larger choice, making it easier in starting out and expanding. I'd go with the Canon 450D.
But you must not just limit yourself to these two cameras. The Nikon D40 and D60, or the more comparable D80 are all extremely great, as is the Pentax K200D.

Sony makes good TV's, Canon makes good cameras!
Canon has been making cameras longer so they have a much better variety of lenses and other accessories.
I'd pick the Canon 450D.
