Can the Sony HDR-SR11 hard drive camcorder be connected to Apple Mac?
Can the Sony HDR-SR11 hard drive camcorder be connected to Apple Mac?
Yes.
Using USB, the camcorder's hard drive should mount like any other external USB device. Copy the video files to the Mac's hard drive.
You will need either the most current version of iMovie HD (the one that came bundled with iLife08, with the 7.1 update) or the most current version of FinalCut Express 4 or FinalCut Pro 2. Earlier versions of iMovie HD and Final Cut can't deal with AVCHD.
The Apple discussions area can be quite useful:

I'm thinking about buying a Sony hdr-sr11 and I need to know if I can put a wide angle lens, and filters on it?
I'm thinking about buying the SONY hdr-sr11 camcorder. And I need to know if its possible to put uv filters on it.. and also a wide angle lens.
yes its possible just make sure anything you buy is 37mm thread size (Filter Diameter ) actually you can use other lenses and filters you only need a stepup ring wich converts 37mm to wichever size you need.
I own a sony HVR a1p ( same thread size) with a Letus mini adapter and i am able to use still lenses from photography cameras
How do i get videos from my Sony Handycam HDR-SR11 onto youtube?
I have one of the newer macbooks.
Note: if u shot your footage in HD (AVCHD) and you only want to use on youtube, select 960x540 import mode to save space and computing power. Once you captured your footage you can basic edit your material in iMovie (it's a really intuitive application you don't need editing experience to get used to it). Refer http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/ for further help, tutorial videos.
There is a direct YouTube publishing option in iMovie under Share menu, it's easy!

I have the new Sony HDR-SR11 and it only comes w USB port. Is there a firewire attachment to transferr?
I know it's better to transfer video with firewire but my camcorder only has mini usb port. What should I do so I won't loose the HD quality when I transfer to my laptop so I can make DVD's?
the video STREAM* (not file) from a miniDV tape has to be CAPTURED via firewire & capture app to produce a video FILE ...w/usb- possiblity of drop frames / unsync... a large number of dropped frames will result in poor quality, "choppy" video & audio output. Since it is a video stream, the lenght of time to capture is the same as the lenght of time the video playsback. But tape formats are best for editing due to lesser compression.
for hdd (sr11), DvD or mem.card vcams, video is already stored as FILES... and these are not streamed (only video on tape is) but just IMPORTED, as in drag & drop using file mgmt-windows explorer. Transfer of files is very fast just like a pc internal hdd. In these instances, firewire is not needed, usb would suffice. For Mem.cards, a usb-card reader will do.
This is the reason why hdd, dvd & mem card vcams are not equipped w/ firewire ports. Heard that Vista doesn't support usb capture of tape-based video.. .haven't got time to test.

What is the difference between the Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder and the HDR-SR11E camcorder? ?
It seems like the HDR-SR11E is more expensive but I haven't found what the difference is.
The "E" is for use in countries that use PAL for TV... not for use in North America or countries that use NTSC TV signals.
Would a film shot with an HDR-SR11 camera be of enough quality to submit to a good film festival?
It has 5 megapixel recording resolution, optical image stabilization, 1920 x 1080, here is a link to the website I am considering buying from..

Thanks a lot!
What are you planning to edit with? AVCHD format video is hugely compressed and a fast CPU, lots of RAM and a ton of available hard drive space is needed to deal with it.
What are you planning to archive the video with? If you drop/break the camcorder during video capture, and have not yet transferred the video off the hard drive, how are you expecting to recover the datafrom that camcorder's internal hard drive? (With miniDV tape or flash memory, just take the media out and use another camcorder).
Are you planning any video capture in a high noise or high vibration environment? Did you know that hard drive based camcorders have a problem with recording in that environment? The heads can park in an effort to protect the hard drive platters.
Are you planning any video at high altitude? Did you know that hard drive based camcorders have a problem with recording in anything over about 9,800 feet due to low air pressure?
Did you know that the small lenses and imaging chips associated with any consumer cams below about $1,400 will result in poor low-light recording behavior and the image will be very grainy - and there is no video editor that can fix this.
Other than this, video captured under good lighting conditions - presuming you learn to use the white balance - will look fine... Audio is a whole different story...
Adorama and bhphotovideo are both good, reputable, online sites to deal with.
How do i get video from my sony handycam (hdr-sr11) to my mac?
i dont have a problem getting pictures. i just use image capture. however; i can not seem to get videos onto my mac. sony did not supply software that works with mac (pisses me off) so im screwed there. im doing this so i can save videos and pictures to an external hdd. so how do i grab videos from my camera?
Since you did not provide any information on what kind of Apple Macintosh you are using - or what sortware you are using to tray and get to the AVCHD compressed high definition video created by that SR11, click here

How do i hook up a hdr-sr11/sr12 camcorder to my computer?
Snowwillow is correct... USB. The cable came in the box with the camcorder. If you need to buy one it is a miniUSB to USB2 cable.
If you are planning to copy the files to the computer for editing, you probably will have bigger issues. The SR11/SR12 record high definition video to AVCHD (MTS/MT2S) file format. You will need to buy a video editor like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere for Windows or for Macintosh you will need the most current version of iMovieHD with updates or FinalCut Express4 (or FinalCutPro2) and an Intel Mac to edit the video. Microsoft MovieMaker and older versions of iMovie cannot deal with AVCHD encoded video.
If I buy the HDR-SR11 a HD camcorder from Sony will I still be able to use it on my mac in Final Cut Express?
If I buy the HDR-SR11 a HD camcorder from Sony will I still be able to use it on my mac in Final Cut Express. It is a 60 GB harddrive camera. Does that mean i can just click and drag the recorded video to final cut. Please Help
If your Mac has an Intel chip and you have the most current version of FCE 4.0, yes...
http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?search=Go&q=hdr-sr11
So... after you copy the files to the Mac and you delete the files from the camcorder... then you edit the video project and decide you are finished so you output to a h.264 data file... and the DVD you burn is in standard definition if you use the Mac's superdrive...
Awesome... Project is done, delete the project files because the next project is coming in the door...
You remember that video you got that would go great in the new project??? oh wait - it is gone. Unless you maintain a full set of copies of the original video data files on another drive or a set of DVDs...
or...
THIS BAND IS SO LOUD - WAIT, THE HARD DRIVE IS LOCKING UP... because the vibrations from the music are causing the hard drive heads to park so the camcorder goes into buffer overflow and won't record... Page 5 of the Handbook.
or...
OMG! This is SO beautiful being at the top of this mountain... wait... is it higher than 9,800 feet? I *hope* this works because I'm never going to be here again... Page 5 of the Handbook.
But yeah - if you actually capture video, then copy/drag/drop is pretty much it...
